Open Doors, which is based across the National Civil War Centre and Palace Theatre Newark, is welcoming a new Artist in Residence.
Elizabeth Lambert’s residency will be an exploration of the stories of Newark and Sherwood, both past, and present. Inspired by artefacts, collections, buildings and heritage sites across the district. Elizabeth will use creative writing, research and craft to reveal local legends as well as gather modern stories from communities that can be shared throughout the county and beyond.
Family Saturday event, Jitterbug June
📅 Join us this weekend for our Family Saturday event, Jitterbug June.
Did you know the Palace Theatre was one of the buildings that helped keep Newark safe in WW2❓
Its tall minarets proved the ideal lookout post for fire watchers (who scoured the horizon for fires in the town) and the cellar was used as a First Aid Post. The Tudor Hall was used to process evacuees from Sheffield in Sept 1939 and then again in 1940 and 1941.
The Women’s Voluntary Service used the hall as a food distribution station and some women's land army recruits slept in the hall before going to their billets.
👉 Come along on Saturday and join us for a tea party in the Tudor Hall, decorate cakes to take home and learn how to dance the jitterbug with the whole family. WWII themed 'Family Five' tours will focus on 5 objects or locations , selected with children and families in mind, including stories, props and plenty of time for questions and chat.
