Family Saturday event, Jitterbug June
📅 Join us this weekend for our Family Saturday event, Jitterbug June.
Did you know the Palace Theatre was one of the buildings that helped keep Newark safe in WW2❓
Its tall minarets proved the ideal lookout post for fire watchers (who scoured the horizon for fires in the town) and the cellar was used as a First Aid Post. The Tudor Hall was used to process evacuees from Sheffield in Sept 1939 and then again in 1940 and 1941.
The Women’s Voluntary Service used the hall as a food distribution station and some women's land army recruits slept in the hall before going to their billets.
👉 Come along on Saturday and join us for a tea party in the Tudor Hall, decorate cakes to take home and learn how to dance the jitterbug with the whole family. WWII themed 'Family Five' tours will focus on 5 objects or locations , selected with children and families in mind, including stories, props and plenty of time for questions and chat.

On Saturday 20th January 2024, Open Doors alongside Collingham & District Local History Society hosted a free heritage event, Hands on History.
Participants travelled back in time to discover early history in and around Collingham, from Pre-History, Saxons and Romans through different activities, demonstrations and being able to talk to the members of the society.
Hands on History was part of Our Heritage – an Open Doors project in 2023-2024. This production is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
In August this year, the Creative Influencers team were granted special access to the Resource Centre: the archives containing thousands of pieces of artwork and objects not currently on display. They spent the afternoon with head curator Glyn, sorting through some of their favourite finds, discussing the theme of ‘Autumn’ and becoming curators themselves. This is what happened… Kids in Museums #TakeoverDay

On 10th July 1913, members of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies arrived in Newark for a peaceful protest in the Market Place, led by their esteemed president Millicent Fawcett. Their efforts had a huge impact on society and we celebrate them still, 110 years later.
🔊Volume up for something to energise your afternoon! We've been making music today with some of our team, Open Doors Board members and volunteers. If you know of any groups who might be interested in getting involved , please let them know to contact us either by emailing [email protected] or giving him a call on 07355 675101.
