Mottisfont, National Trust A romantic house and gallery set in beautiful gardens beside the River Test, owned by the National Trust. You can:
Walk, play and picnic in beautiful gardens.

Ancient trees, bubbling brooks and rolling lawns frame this lovely old house. Crafted from a medieval priory, it is full of surprises, with art that intrigues and delights. Discover carpets of spring bulbs, glorious summer roses, rich autumn colours and a colourful winter garden

Explore the rooms of an intriguing house, including a drawing room by Whistler designed to trick the eye and a thirteenth century cellarium

Come back throughout the year to see different exhibitions in the gallery and the latest installations by our artists in residence as well as the house collection of early twentieth-century art

Take in our beautiful estate on foot or by bike. Look out for seasonal flowers and calm tranquility in woodlands beside the River Test. Come and visit us: We are closer than you think to places such as Romsey, Southampton, Winchester, Andover, Stockbridge and Salisbury. Use the postcode SO51 0LP to find us or look out for the brown tourist road signs around the Romsey area.

Is it time to treat yourself to a new to you, book?

New for 2026, we have opened an additional second-hand bookshop just along the boardwalk from Visitor Reception. Do take a look.

At Mottisfont, we are delighted to receive book donations, however, at this time we have no storage space available to receive any more stock (true as 12 October 2026)

We politely ask you to contact us, please, before bringing your donations in. Thank you for your generosity.

At Mottisfont, we carry out tree inspections at this time of year. Here is Clair, a member of the gardens team, spotting fungal fruiting bodies as they appear, which can sometimes relate to decay in the tree.

Christmas magic is coming to Mottisfont!

From 21 November 2026 – 3 January 2027, you’ll journey from a towering beanstalk to a castle in the clouds. Along the way there’ll be Jack, Dame Trott, Pat the Cow, interactive activities, festive games and thousands of twinkling decorations and beautifully dressed Christmas trees.

There’s plenty happening outside too, including brilliantly silly challenges, a festive family trail and lots of opportunities for those all-important Christmas photos.

Packed with storytelling, fun, music and gentle spookiness, it's the perfect event for little trick-or-treaters.​ Standby for We're Going on a Ghost Hunt™ storytelling sessions led by Bloomsbury. The storytelling sessions are free of charge (included in normal admission) 45 minutes in duration and must be pre-booked. Perfect for children aged 2 - 8 years.

Join the fun at Mottisfont! We’re Going on a Ghost Hunt™ Halloween Adventure!

Based on the bestselling children’s books, this Halloween the Bunnies of Hoppity Hill are setting off on an adventure to find the ghosts hidden around the garden at Mottisfont with heaps of exciting things to see and do along the way.

Come along to join a spooktacular family activity trail specially designed for under 8s.

No booking required. Trail included in normal admission. Trail running 3 October - 1 November.

We have a handful of spaces in our storytelling events this weekend.
