This is a group portrait of male and female pithead workers at colliery near Airdrie.

Whilst women had been banned from working underground since 1842, it was common for unmarried women in mining communities to work above ground in pithead tasks such as the sorting of coal. Wartime recruitment and labour shortages likely meant there was a higher number of women working at this colliery than before.

This week for #WomensHistoryMonth, we’ll be showing that #ThisGirlCan! We’ll be sharing photos and items that show women who were pioneers for taking on new roles and challenges.

These women are machining parts for boiler feed pumps for steam engines. Weirs specialised in making pumping equipment including for the Royal Navy.

During the First World War women took over many jobs normally done by men and which at the time were often considered inappropriate for women to do. The war showed that women could do men's jobs just as well.

However, the change was short-lived because when the war ended and the men returned from the front the women lost their war jobs.
