More of the same tasks this week. The Post Office closes today, which just leaves the Projected Picture Trust to soldier on for a few more months. Thank goodness for our wonderful helpers.

Well into the clearing of cabinets, photographing each item before packing and stacking the boxes. We have very hard-working helpers in what will be several more weeks of work. Often we can hear the public outside, sometimes milling around and trying to find a way in, especially if the have visited The Collection in the past. Our ' thank you all but goodbye' letter which we had displayed for all to see on our door was removed. We therefore apologise to would-be visitors and friends for what seems to be a discourteous omission, namely thanking you all for visiting and sharing reminiscences with us over the past 21 years.

Good friends Gary and Anna took pics of the collection in its current surroundings. Mark and I spent several hours sorting, wrapping and stashing contents of a couple of shelves, so at least we have made a start on removing the collection to safe storage. Have to remind ourselves that Easter and the activities offered to family visitors have always involved us and our collection. Not this year, so how will our forced closure reflect Bletchley Park's policy of offering attractions for visitors with young families.....

26/02/2015

Hoping to see lots of friends as visitors over the weekend. Open until 4pm Saturday, then on Sunday 1st March till 5pm. Remember, the collection closes permanently on Sunday.

Lovely but bitter sweet weekend meeting so many visitors who have been to see us on many previous visits to Bletchley Park. They are stunned and incredulous at the news of our forced departure. Next weekend will be even more upsetting of course...... Several teachers and pupils from local schools visiting us as friends have expressed their dismay at our departure. They tell us that a visit to BP with their classes to enjoy a WW2 day will no longer be on offer in the way they find relevant. As retired teachers, we shall sorely miss our sessions with schools.

Important announcement

In response to the directive of The Bletchley Park Trust, The Holley/Cornelius Collection will close its doors to the public on Sunday 1st March 2015. The closure is permanent.
Over the past 21 years there we have shared our collection with Bletchley Park's visitors and made many friends from amongst them. It is with great sadness that we are closing.
We would like to thank those visitors for their kind words of appreciation at this difficult time.

Bit of a quiet time these last few days everyone busy
Xmas shopping .Unearthed cache of 1930's and 1940's Christmas cards to show some visitors today. Many cards have non-Christmassy flowers, scenes and figures on them and are quite unlike those of today.
The collection will be closed on the 27th and 28th December. However, Bletchley Park itself will be open as usual.

We both spent Tuesday 11th Nov doing an all day out-reach session at Brooklands Middle School, Leighton Buzzard.
The warm welcome we received from staff and pupils made the day a joy. They all appreciated the WW1 and WW2 artefacts that we had brought to display and handle. The wind-up gramophone and funny records in particular amused them, and they were genuinely interested in learning about the history of some of the pieces, the two 'Dead Pennies' in particular. The catering staff put out Wartime food
for lunch, and we had a choice of beef stew, corned beef hash or leek and potato bake. Apple crumble and custard. The school choir entertained civic dignitaries and local senior citizens for a sing-along with tea, cakes and sandwiches. There was a raffle too.
The Headmaster said how proud he is of his pupils. Quite rightly so.

Mark and I are busy putting together a whole day presentation to a middle school next week. There will be artefacts for handling, a wind-up gramophone with a selection of records, copies of original documents and various pamphlets from both World Wars.Lots of artefacts ranging from part of a 6" German Artillery shell, a beautiful bracelet made from a timing chain from Zeppelin L33, to delicate silk postcards. We will show these pieces to the pupils and answer questions. The pamphlet on cooking Festive Fare, dating from 1944 should raise some eyebrows. This will certainly be be a fun day.

Mark and I had a great weekend with our many dozens of visitors, including Chris Chandler and family. We love the excited buzz when visitors spot a toy or item from their past. It is also great to answer a query and show youngsters items to help them with their school projects. Families enjoy playing with the traditional toys. The children are often amazed there are no batteries or buttons to make the toy work.
