“Claudia”
Pastel on paper

A recent commission — and my first time working with Sennelier pastels. Always grateful for the opportunity to learn something new and push my materials a little further. It felt especially refreshing to step away from purely black and white portraiture and embrace colour again.

‘The Parliamentarian’

Any guesses who this is?!

The first of (hopefully) many portraits in a new project inspired by the wonderful caricatures of Vanity Fair. I’m setting out to capture the quirks, charm, and eccentricities of the people I know and love. I can’t wait to hone the style and technique of my rogues’ gallery on my friends and family! 😉

Another portrait of Jacob — this time a smaller oil study. It was such a treat to get back to oils again! I challenged myself to keep a limited palette and avoid muddying the colours… always easier said than done. On to the next one!

I promise I’m capable of more than just political portraits — but being married to a man so deeply involved in politics means those opportunities often find their way to me!

This particular piece was created for an auction at a political dinner, which made finally meeting Jacob even more surreal. After studying his face for so long and carefully bringing him to life on paper, it was such an honour to meet him in person — and he was so kind about my work.

I can’t believe I’ve only got two weeks left of my portrait course at Heatherley’s! We’ve got started on a new model, and this time around I tried a new approach to painting. Instead of covering the canvas with a wash, I kept it white and started to block in all the different tones, instead of ‘drawing’ the head and body with lines. I also decided to add a little more interest to the image I’m capturing by including the orchid in the background and a little more of the model’s body.

Here’s a recent attempt at an oil copying a lovely photo of my mum in a sun hat, basking in the sunlight — one of my favourite pictures of her.

Here’s my portrait from this week—almost finished! I ran out of time for some of the finer details, but overall, I’m pleased with how it came together. This session, I discovered the wonders of linseed oil, which made the paint beautifully smooth and fluid. Excited to start fresh next week with a new model and put these techniques into practice!

Thrilled to share my latest portrait of Sir John Redwood, created especially for last night’s auction at the Farnham & Stoke Poges Conservative Association dinner. My first charcoal portrait in quite some time—it was a joy to return to a traditional medium again.

We’re now in week five of our Progressing with Portraiture course, having transitioned from pencil to oil painting—a medium I haven’t touched since A Level!

Reacquainting myself with the fundamentals of oil painting and color theory has been both challenging and rewarding, particularly in terms of observation. Rather than relying on preconceived notions of skin tone, I’m learning to truly see the colors present in the face. Surprisingly, areas that might seem purely warm or neutral often contain unexpected shades of green, purple, and grey.

With just one more week to go before moving on to our next model, I’m hoping to finish this one in time!
