'Make Light of It' opens this Thursday, bringing together a selection of works that explore light, darkness and the quiet beauty of everyday life.

Simmons is particularly interested in depicting what she describes as “the drama of light shining in a dark place,” using it to illuminate moments of stillness within everyday life. Her urban landscapes, interior public spaces, bus stops and escalators become sites of reflection. Through nuanced compositions and a sensitive handling of atmosphere, Simmons reveals a gentle, often unnoticed beauty and an attentive way of looking.

At the core of the exhibition, Simmons presents light and dark not as opposites but as interconnected elements. As she explains…

“We fear the dark, but if we really have the courage to explore the dark times and accept them, we will gradually begin to see that we cannot have light without the dark. They really are one thing. And the most ordinary places, the bus stop, the escalator, have a beauty of their own, if we are awake to see it.”

Although Anna has painted all her life, she had no formal training in her youth. After her children had left home, she gave up her job as a teacher to devote herself fully to painting. She later studied at St. Martin’s, a period that inspired a particular direction in her work which continues today.

Thank you Neil Goodwin at Marlborough News for a fantastic article introducing our upcoming exhibition at The Little Gallery, Marlborough.

20th Century Paintings, Sculpture & Ceramics
Friday 27 March - Friday 17 April

Opening Reception: Thursday 26 March, 4pm - 8pm
RSVP in advance to [email protected]

For three weeks commencing Friday 27 March, we will be hosting an exhibition featuring works by some of the most notable British artists of the last Century, including Patrick Heron, Elizabeth Frink, Bernard Leach and Sandra Blow.

This exhibition charts the shifting artistic movements that defined the last century, beginning with Impressionism and Post Impressionism through works by Harold Harvey, John Duncan Fergusson and Richard Eurich, represented by an evocative work of a steam train passing through the Wiltshire Downs.

The radical spirit of London’s 1960s Avant Garde is also reflected in works by David Hockney and Patrick Procktor, artists whose distinctive styles helped reshape British contemporary art.

A particular highlight of the exhibition is the inclusion of four works from the studio of Anthony Whishaw (b.1930), including the rare Interior with Musicians (1967), which was directly inspired by the artist encountering Pink Floyd rehearing next door to his studio in Notting Hill Gate for one of their first ‘underground’ gigs.
