Phantasms & Frequencies is a collection of new ceramic sculptures that give material form more commonly encountered in music, poetry and drama.

The work remains closely tied to the material labour of transformation, making use of reclaimed clays and recycled glazes. Absorbing references from landscape, the body, and partially formed sounds and sensations encountered in dream-like states, the moments just before waking.

Phantasms & Frequencies is a collection of new ceramic sculptures that give material form more commonly encountered in music, poetry and drama. Through it fictional narratives emerge from a sensitivity to experience, translated into fleeting impressions and a language of form that is at once intuitive and complex.

The work remains closely tied to the material labour of transformation, making use of reclaimed clays and recycled glazes. Absorbing references from landscape, the body, and partially formed sounds and sensations encountered in dream like states, the moments just before waking. Images arise in quick succession, a rush of energy followed by a quiet calm, or even emptiness. These are glimpses, sudden and fleeting; a starless sky that is not entirely void; a field imagined in a future state, marked by scars of extraction; a body crystallised into the landscape.

Within these dreamlike terrains appears the ghost of Pandora, the figure from Greek mythology created as the first woman. Pandora was given a vessel resembling a large storage jar, originally imagined as a clay pot, and instructed never to open it. Overcome by curiosity, she lifted the lid and released countless evils into the world. Only at the last moment did she close the vessel again, leaving Hope inside, preserved either as a fragile comfort for humanity, or, on another interpretation, as the greatest deception of all, prolonging human suffering.

Introducing: The Maternity Series

Liminal Gallery’s Founding Director, Louise Fitzjohn, will be on maternity leave from June 2026 – April 2027.

During this time, the gallery will continue through The Maternity Series, a programme of exhibitions led by Liminal artists and their invited collaborators.

The series offers an opportunity for artists within the gallery’s network to take on the space, presenting solo and group exhibitions while continuing the spirit of the programme.

A new chapter for the gallery, and an exciting moment for the artists who shape it.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Liminal Gallery so far, for the kindness, encouragement and everything in between. I hope you’ll continue to support our brilliant artists as they take over the space with a series of exciting and unique exhibitions.

Watch this space for the exhibition announcements 👀
