Gallery artist Neil Wood has just delivered three outstanding new bronze scultures ready for this weekend's 15th to 17th November. We're on stand 306.

Rumba, 2023, Bronze (edition of 9), 36 x 19 x 10cm
Don Quixote III , 2024, Unique Bronze, 37 x 29 x 9cm
Don Quixote II , 2024, Unique Bronze, 26 x 18 x 8cm

Neil Wood has been a practising professional sculpture and fine artist for three decades. He has many years experience teaching and lecturing in fine art and sculpture at institutions in the UK. He has worked in various settings; in education, as artist in residence and visiting lecturer, alongside his practice producing sculpture for exhibition and commissions.

He employs a Modernist methodology to explore the human condition in the 21st century. He continues to use the figure as a vehicle to explore formal material qualities and visual language as a means of expressing, often complex ideas, about the world we inhabit and the nature of human experience and relationships.

He sees his practice as two distinct strands; public commissions and gallery artworks. Commissions provide opportunities to work on a large scale requiring understanding of sculpture in specific context and an engagement with community and stake holders. Sculpture for a gallery setting represents a more direct creative output, where the work develops, free from the constraints of a commission brief. The work evolves by experimentation with materials and process.

Saved by a sponsorship that took him from Berlin to London as a child, the artist later fell in with Soho’s artistic crowd including Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud

NEW PAINTING:

Title: “H tag, Northern Quarter”
Medium: Acrylic on canvas board
Framed size: 38cm x 28cm

This painting shows one of my favourite streets in the Northern Quarter, Thomas Street, a place I’ve documented a number of times.

For this composition, I wanted to create an interplay between the H on the wall and the passers by. This massive letter H appeared earlier this year and I think it’s the first tag in central Manchester by the graffiti artist Helch (Their work is mainly seen in London and on bridges on the M25 & M1).

As a lot of you know, most of my paintings are about people and technology. Here we see two people: one is standing, scrolling, and the other, a Deliveroo rider, is cycling along the pavement, intently looking at his phone. Both very familiar poses.

I’ve called this painting “H tag” as a reference to graffiti tags and digital tags. A ‘tag’ in graffiti language is an identifier, the graffiti artist’s signature. An ‘H Tag’ in the digital world is short for Header Tag, which helps search optimisation on websites, thereby referencing the digital business, Deliveroo.

Another small element I wanted to include is the gig flyposter. The Black Keys were due to be the first band to headline the Co-op Live, but due to technical issues with the new venue, their concert on the 27th April 2024 was delayed until the following month.

This painting is for sale and will be at Manchester Art Fair with Saul Hay Gallery 15-17 November 2024. Please contact Ian at the gallery if you’re interested in it. Many thanks 🙏

Who doesn't love a little combination of painting and sculpture?
There is a real conversation happening between the two in these juxtapositions. Each enhances the other I think.
Paintings by Johnny Jones, Albert Irvin RA and Vanessa Cuthbert FRSA. Sculptures in bronze by Neil Wood and Peter Seal.

We opened Saul Hay Gallery eight years ago today. Since that unbelievable evening we have had good times, music, laughter, visitors young and old(er) and some of the best art by some of the loveliest artists imaginable.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us across those 8, sometimes turbulent years. Thanks to each and every artist with whom we have worked. Without them, we are nothing and their talent and dedication leaves me in awe.

New in to the gallery are two fantastic photograph works by .co.uk
The Sky Above Her, No.5 (72x59cm framed)
and
Llanberis (89x75cm framed)
Both come in an Edition of 25 + 2 Artist's Proofs.
(the 3rd image shows the set up to capture the image at Llanberis)

Of the first, Robert says, "One evening as the sun was setting, the colours in the sky were every shade from the brightest reds and oranges on the horizon to the darkest blues high in the sky. These had to be photographed.
Sometimes there is a vast kaleidoscope of colours, others, a simple gradient of blue. Spectacular or simple, each is as beautiful and compelling as the other.
These are unedited and it's rare that atmospheric conditions allow these pictures to be taken.

Our visitors come for the art, of course, but we get very many compliments too for our beautiful mid-century modern furniture. Our sideboard by Stonehill and our desk by G-Plan are great for displaying sculpture and ceramics. Here shown with ceramic pieces by Pietro Sanna and bronzes by Peter Seal.
