Exhibition Announcement! 📢

Fully Awake
4 November - 17 December 2021

Fully Awake 6.6 is the final show of a six-part intergenerational cycle of exhibitions involving academics, artists and art educators in the UK. In each version of the show several artists are invited to submit a piece of work to be included in an exhibition. In addition to submitting a piece of work themselves, the artists are also asked to invite two ‘guests’ (each of whom will also submit work for exhibition) with the following conditions: one must be an artist that they have been taught by; and one must be an artist that they have taught. This unorthodox invitational approach creates unexpected fluid networks through collaborations and the exhibitions are intended to reveal these.

Curated by Ian Hartshorne and Sean Kaye for Teaching Painting.

Artists: David Alker with Michael Brick and Inga Lineviciute. Eliza Bonham Carter with John Dougill and Sarah Poots Graham Chorlton with Michael Brick and Jack Foster. Dan Coombs with Ken Kiff and Fatemah Bagherian. James Green with John Strutton and Hannah Short Atsuhide Ito with Mick Finch and Harriet Poznansky. Peter Layzell with Roger Woodiwiss and Abi Hampsey Donal Moloney with Lisa Milroy and Stephanie Carr Kathleen Mullaniff with Mario Dubsky and Liz Arnold. Sarah Pickstone with Prunella Clough and Sara Anstis Wayne Robinson with Tom McGuirk and Amy Robinson. Gary Simmonds with Peter Lloyd Lewis and Conor Rogers John Strutton with Alan Miller and Stephen Dunne. Ruth Sumner with John Lancaster and Tom Robertson. Sue Williams with Terry Setch and Geraint Ross Evans.

Online Digital Catwalk

Holden Gallery, Manchester and Microneme, Wuhan, China
7:30pm Thursday 26th August 2021

The Holden Gallery & Microneme, Wuhan have come together to present a digital catwalk from Bruce Asbestos, featuring his new Cruise Collection, mixing real footage and digitally rendered clothes. As this is a digital event, all attendees can enjoy front row seats.

Informed by a research trip through the UK, US and China the work muses on the power of cultural identity within a globalised visual culture and will feature wild interpretations of pop cultural icons, often from the perspective as an outsider. Expect references from anything from Sci-fi films to Shakespeare’s Macbeth including Bruce's recurring motif of the ‘Eye of Newt’.

Bruce Asbestos Cruise Collection is made possible by the support of UK-China Connections through Culture 2020-21.

Join us tomorrow at 7:30pm for the launch of Bruce Asbestos: Cruise Collection 2021. This digital catwalk mixes real footage of the Holden Gallery and Microneme, Wuhan, with digitally rendered clothes.

Bruce Asbestos' work draws from a rich history of painting, painting, sculpture, popular culture, folklore and fairy tales. The artwork mixes everyday objects with high art, fashion, and aspects of popular culture from Japan, Europe, and the US.

This new collection muses on the power of cultural identity within a globalised visual culture and will feature wild interpretations of pop cultural icons, often from the perspective as an outsider. Expect references from anything from Sci-fi films to Shakespeare’s Macbeth including Bruce's recurring motif of the ‘Eye of Newt’.

"Through his shrewd use of social media, personal re-hashing of global pop culture and use of new digital technologies, he has established an unmistakable visual identity and unique brand (complete with logos) to almost become a ‘living artwork’." – Art Review

The Holden Gallery's curator Zoe Watson comments: "We recognise that the initial years after graduating can be a challenging time, particularly for those whose academic studies have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, where lack of access to space, resources, and guidance have prevented them from refining and developing skillsets, and realising ambitious work. I am delighted that we are able to support the artistic and professional development of these six graduates over the next year."

The bursary awards were open to graduates from 2020 and 2021. Each award comprises of a £1500 bursary and mentoring sessions with one of six visual arts mentors who will support them over the next 12 months. Thanks to our participating mentors: Rhiannon Ewing-James, Tom Lovelace, Kim McAleese, Fraser Muggeridge, Harold Offeh, and Michelle Williams Gamaker.

We're delighted to announce our summer programme!

We will be launching the new gallery programme with a site-specific wall painting by Lothar Götz. 'Pool' will transform the entire Holden Gallery space into a vibrant, colourful receptacle.

“One of my first associations when visiting the Holden Gallery was a feeling like entering an empty swimming pool. The sense of a vast space which one has the urge to fill. Like the urge to fill an empty pool, I had the desire to fill the space with colour.” - Lothar Götz

*** Please note, visiting access will be confirmed as soon as possible, depending on government guidance as it is announced. Visiting details will be outlined on our website.

Please join us for a live online discussion to coincide with the launch of a new film 'The Intersectional Hydra' on Friday 28 May, 12:30 - 13:30 with artists Harold Offeh, Michelle Williams Gamaker and a collective of students from Manchester School of Art.

Over the last few months, Harold Offeh and Michelle Williams Gamaker have engaged in a series of discussions with students, questioning our understanding of the art school today, in the age of Covid-19. These sessions have culminated in the production of a collaborative film, made from contributions by the students.

The talk is in partnership with Bunker Talks and will be chaired by Dr. Hannah Singleton, who is Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Joint Co-Ordinator for the Department of Art and Performance. Please register your free ticket here: https://bit.ly/3feg7I8.
