Richard Hatchwell was an antiquarian and bibliophile. He was a great supporter of Athelstan Museum and before he died he arranged, with the support of his family, that his Malmesbury collection should come to the museum.

He was born in 1927 in Malmesbury and educated at Dean Close, Cheltenham. He left school early to enlist in the Navy; after being demobbed in 1947 he went into the antique book trade. In 1952 his father died and he moved back to Malmesbury to help his mother with the family antique shop.

TALK: Aldelm and the Saxon โ€˜palaceโ€™ at Foxley

Tony McAleavy will explain the significance of the remarkable archaeological discoveries made at Cowage Farm near Foxley in the 1970s and 1980s. This site helps us to understand how Malmesbury Abbey was endowed by the royal family of the West Saxons.

Aldhelm was a royal prince and the son of King Centwine. The site at Foxley was almost certainly given to Aldhelm by his father and helped to transform Malmesbury into one of the wealthiest monasteries in England.

Further to his recent sell-out lecture on the Silk Road, Jonathan Tucker is delighted to invite you to a further talk, the subject this time being his experiences serving in the Hong Kong Police during the turbulent years of the 1980s.

He uses images, video clips, personal anecdotes and a wealth of media and historical sources to paint a picture of Hong Kong during the height of the colonial era, to recall some of the most infamous crimes of that time and to look at how they were solved.

The Victorians would accessorise their clothes with lace edging and frills, and the most fine and intricate lace was made according to Malmesbury patterns.

Malmesbury lace was a thriving cottage industry and the tradition still continues today.

It was made ~1850, and used to be regularly ridden in the Malmesbury Carnival.
