🌊 TO THE SEA – Maritime Museum Experience in Clay 🌊

Saturday 26 September | 10.30am–3.30pm

Explore Lyme Regis Museum’smaritime collections in a whole new way in this unique hands-on clay workshop with artist Ilse Black.

Inspired by the fascinating objects in the Museum’s Maritime Gallery and Lyme Regis’ enduring relationship with the sea, you’ll create a two-part sculpture – one piece representing you as the onlooker, and another inspired by an object from the collection.

Through scale, posture, texture and form, you’ll explore what that object means to you and what it reveals about the experience of visiting a museum.

No previous ceramic experience is needed – just bring an open mind and curiosity for the stories that objects hold.

✨ All materials are provided, and your finished sculpture will be fired and ready to collect from the Museum or posted to you after the workshop.

Part of ‘To the Sea’, Lyme Regis Museum’s exciting new artist residency programme, funded by Arts Council England.

We were delighted to welcome Dr Sven Sachs and Katrin Sachs to the Museum last week. They visited to undertake important research on one of our remarkable specimens - a Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus, first described by the pioneering geologist William Conybeare back in 1824.

Sven and Katrin are working to define and clarify this genus and species - vital scientific work that helps ensure our understanding of these magnificent ancient marine reptiles is as accurate and complete as possible.

It is a wonderful reminder that the specimens in our collection are not just fascinating objects to admire, they are active scientific resources, still contributing to our understanding of prehistoric life nearly 200 years after they were first identified.

We wish Sven and Katrin all the very best with their research and look forward to seeing the results!

Join us on Saturday 5th September at 2pm as we welcome author, journalist and fossil hunter Jodi Summers from the American Museum of Natural History for a fascinating talk:

✨ ‘That’s Sedimentary, My Dear Watson: How English Ammonites Changed Everything’ ✨

Based on her wonderful new book, 'We Dig Ammonites: Fact, Folklore and History', published by Columbia University Press, Jodi will take us on a captivating journey through the world of one of prehistory’s most iconic fossils.

And what better place to explore the story of ammonites than Lyme Regis, on the world-famous Jurassic Coast?

Copies of 'We Dig Ammonites' will be available to purchase and have signed by Jodi on the day - the perfect souvenir of a fascinating afternoon.

We are delighted to announce the launch of 'To the Sea' - an exciting new artist residency programme at Lyme Regis Museum, funded by Arts Council England.

Beginning in September 2026, three contemporary artists will be working in residency here at the Museum, drawing inspiration from our Maritime Gallery collection and the town's deep and storied relationship with the sea.

* Writer and performer Sarah Acton will delve into Lyme's sea legends, ghost stories and lost maritime histories
* Ceramicist and illustrator Ilse Black will explore the collection through the lens of the ocean itself, creating ceramic sculptural forms and vessels
* Printmaker Emma Molony will map Lyme's global maritime connections through the art of print and storytelling

Throughout the residency, visitors are warmly invited to engage with the artists at our residency desk in the Maritime Gallery - and a series of public workshops and open days will offer hands-on creative experiences for everyone.

The programme will culminate in a shared 'To the Sea' exhibition opening in February 2027.

There’s nothing quite like finding your own piece of Jurassic history and this week, the Sojkowski family made a fantastic discovery on one of our Fossil Walks: an ichthyosaur tooth!

Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles that lived in the seas that covered what is now the Jurassic Coast, millions of years ago. Finding a tooth is a wonderful reminder that there are plenty of prehistoric treasures waiting to be discovered along our coastline!

Our guided Fossil Walks are a fantastic way to explore the coast here in Lyme Regis, learn about the geology and fossils of the Jurassic Coast and discover how to search safely and responsibly.

You never know what you might find - perhaps your own little piece of Jurassic history!

Join local artist Darrell Wakelam on Thursday 20th August for our Ammonite Graveyard Painting Workshop, a wonderfully creative session inspired by one of the Jurassic Coast's most iconic fossils!

Ammonites have been found on these very beaches for millions of years and are perhaps the most recognised fossil of the Lyme Regis coastline. This Thursday, get creative with paint and create your very own Ammonite Graveyard artwork to take home - guided every step of the way by the brilliant Darrell.

Choose your own fossil and have a go at polishing it to reveal its natural colours, patterns and details. It’s a great way to get hands-on with a piece of Jurassic history - and you can take your finished fossil home with you!
