Lostwithiel Museum: The Biggest Little Museum in Cornwall Lostwithiel’s heritage is well documented in this small, independent museum.There are varied displays of wonderful artefacts donated by locals. Free entry!

This tiny two-roomed museum (run and stewarded by volunteers) in the old town jail is packed with the social history of Lostwithiel. Topics as diverse as mining, lace making, farming, the town band, the old cinema, schooldays, royal connections, several wars, the church, and much more, are interestingly covered. Most items have been donated by locals thus telling the fascinating story of everyday

life in this ancient town that was once a capital fo Cornwall. There’s also a reference area with copies of various censuses and graveyard plots, for example, for those interested in tracing their family trees. We’re open from Easter to October, Monday-Friday, 10.30-4.30 (and some other times including festival days and occasional Saturday mornings) volunteers willing!

🪙🍊 Saltash Penny and Fruit Throwing Event 2026! 🍊🪙

Join us for this year’s much-loved Penny and Fruit Throwing Event, where the Mayor of Saltash, Cllr Brian Stoyel, and the Civic Party will throw hot pennies and fruit from the Guildhall windows.

📍 The Guildhall, Lower Fore Street

This traditional ceremony dates back to the 13th century, when wealthy townspeople threw coins and pieces of fruit from the Guildhall’s first-floor windows to children gathered below. It was a gesture of generosity and celebration within the community.

While its exact origins have been lost over time, the tradition is closely linked to the historic “Mayor Choosing” ceremony and the granting of town charters in the medieval period.

It is a fantastic event for all the family, and we would love to see you there.

FREE event .... we are holding another FREE demonstration on decoupage and lampshade making at Par Market tomorrow 11.00 - 1.00
Decoupage is the craft of decorating an object by glueing paper onto its surface and sealing it with layers of varnish. Vicki loves this craft, and if it stands still, she decoupage's it !!

LOSTWITHIEL MUSEUM ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTION TO LOSTWITHIEL NEWSLETTER: June 2026
VOLUNTEERS: Although the season is well underway it’s never too late to join our team of museum volunteers. We welcome this opportunity to say thank you to those who’ve already joined us as without their involvement the museum would not be the special asset to the town that it clearly is. In particular we are looking for additional stewards to ‘meet and greet’ visitors from Mondays to Saturdays (inclusive) during the season. One of the most rewarding aspects of being involved with the museum is meeting visitors and seeing how appreciative they are of what we have to offer. If you have 2 hours a week to spare please contact Maggie Lancaster on 01208 873093 or Christine Walton on 01208 871456 for more information. TOWN HERITAGE WALKS: Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor a guided walk with one of our experienced guides is an excellent way of getting to know more about this fascinating town. We guarantee that you will not be disappointed. There’s no need to book in advance unless you have some special requirements — in which case please contact Pauline Gillett (Walks Co-ordinator) on 01208 872040. The weekly Wednesday walks start at 11.00am from outside the Community Centre in the main car park — and last for about 90 minutes. The charge per adult is £5 — and there is no charge for children. LOSTFEST: A special thank you to the stewards who volunteered to provide extra cover to enable us to open the museum for Lostfest on Sunday 17 May. It was so encouraging to see visitors enjoying their visit to the museum. When it comes to organising special community events Lostwithiel certainly knows how to do it. Thank you to the Lostfest organisers for the huge amount of time and effort entailed in putting on this annual festival. This is an exciting opportunity to help care for and shape the future of some of Cornwall’s most important historic places.

From hillforts and standing stones to engine houses and ancient landscapes, Cornwall Heritage Trust now cares for 20 historic sites across Cornwall. We are also about to take on the ownership of a Georgian Country House and have plans to acquire two further historic sites this year.

We’re looking for a strategic and passionate Historic Sites Manager to lead the care, protection and development of these extraordinary places, balancing archaeology, ecology, public access and community engagement.

Based at Krowji, Redruth, with regular visits to sites across Cornwall
Full time: 35 hours per week
Fixed term contract: 2 years
Salary: £36,621

You’ll lead our growing sites team, oversee conservation and management plans, develop partnerships and projects, and help ensure Cornwall’s heritage remains accessible and protected for generations to come.
