It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the closure of Sophia Contemporary. We have been privileged and honoured to collaborate with a group of incredibly talented artists from around the world and become a part of their lives and careers. We would like to thank them first and foremost for their passion, dedication and trust. We are also very grateful to the collectors, curators, art advisors, journalists and to all our collaborators and followers, art professionals and art lovers alike, who have supported our gallery.

Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly difficult for young and mid-sized galleries like Sophia Contemporary to develop and thrive in the current art market. After much deliberation, we have taken the difficult decision to close the gallery in order to explore other opportunities. We are looking forward to the next chapter in our lives and remain committed to helping our artists' careers develop in our future roles in the art world.

On Sunday, we closed Mayfair Art Weekend with a tour guided by Vassili Tsarenkov, one of the directors of the gallery. If you didn't make it, you may still come to see our current show 'Veronica Brovall: Wear the Hear', which will be on display through 28 July.

Where earlier artists were focused on the uncanniness of new electronics and mass-produced food, however, or stripped them down to a midcentury malaise, Ms. Belanger takes a middle path. Her sculptures, with their rounded surfaces and pastel hues, reflect an era of postmodern design, of so-called “user friendly” electronics and “relatable” experiences. Gadgets have become more prosthetic than ever and everything from hot dogs to cigarettes can be “organic.” — (New York Times, 2017)

Abstract Expressionism in London

Sophia Contemporary is proud to present at Art Dubai 2018 a curated presentation of new paintings and sculptures by Afruz Amighi, Iva Gueorguieva, Amir Nikravan and Konrad Wyrebek.

Art Dubai Contemporary is extraordinarily diverse. The 2018 fair features 78 galleries from 42 countries, from the world’s most influential galleries to dynamic young art spaces. Likewise, the artists range from emerging and upcoming practitioners from lesser-known art capitals to household names. The works cover all artistic media—including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, video, photography and performance.

"I believe that abstraction allows access to a different type of visuality. I move from vivid images based in experience that crowd the space on the surface of my eyes…but I make the paintings with my body; I see them with my body." — Iva Gueorguieva (Art Haps, 2014)

Iva Gueorguieva (b. 1974, Bulgaria) moved to Baltimore in her teenage years. After studying in Baltimore and Philadelphia, Gueorguieva moved to the West Coast in Los Angeles in the mid-2000s where she has been living and working ever since. The fragmentation of space characteristic of her work comes not only from a working-through of cubism, futurism, vortices, and constructivism, but also from her experience of the collapse of the communist regime in Bulgaria in 1988. In combining simple elements such as metal scraps, fabric, and stone to create sculptural assemblages, Gueorguieva also draws her inspiration from the Californian landscape where she resides, while also referencing the legacy of American and European movements such as Dada, Arte Provera, and California Assemblage.
