The Online Museum (OM) is a new kind of museum; entirely dedicated to art works created in, and for, a truly contemporary medium. The Online Museum is a not-for-profit, collaborative, initiative that aims to showcase a historically relevant body of work, in a bespoke-for-the-internet curatorial experience. There web is ephemeral, with bits and bytes living only for minutes of people’s screens, and disappearing with no ceremony. The web is a powerful and contemporary medium for expression; being innately social and with global reach. It has changed society profoundly, even in its infancy, and offers great innovation in the world of art. Yet, this is hardly recognised. The Online Museum is a not-for-profits organisation that aims to curate and preserve the best examples of internet art. Being the first of its kind, it serves both its curatorial goal of carefully selecting noteworthy works which were made for its online medium; and keeping a comprehensive interactive archive of works and artists bios.

Swiss police release robot that bought ecstasy online

In Switzerland, St. Gallen police released !Mediengruppe Bitnik's online robot from prison. "The bot and the artists will not be charged."

Part of the exhibition The Darknet: From Memes to Onionland, the bot had a daily allowance in bitcoin and was let loose on the Darknet (secret internet) to shop for random items, which were presented in the The Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen gallery.

Problems arose when the bot obtained illegal substances, raising questions about the responsibility for the artworks actions. Truly something never before experienced.

St. Gallen police released the bot and decided not to press charges against the artists, but confiscated the drugs. Wise decision.

$5 gets an artwork made for you.

Electric Objects partnered with some of their favourite artists and launched a Kickstarter campaign with a simple concept: 4 bespoke digital artworks, generated from your personal data.

The history of art commissions is the history of wealthy people paying artists to make something about wealthy people, or big institutions paying artists to make something about everybody else.

Error (#15)

"This Is Not an Error asks seven artists and internet personas to redefine the idea of the boring 404 page and reconceptualize what an error means. Can a glitch be the art itself: a portal to a new experience? Where would these artists like to spend time while they wait? For those who feel the internet has become too polished, clickbait-ridden, and predictable, the pages in This Is Not an Error serve as a reminder that the internet can still be a very wild frontier."

Walking the fine line between Mad and Genius: The last ever McDonalds meal in Iceland, preserved for the world to see through the Internet.

Must we preserve what has become such an important part of vernacular culture, or dismiss it as consumerist propaganda?

After the economic crash in Iceland McDonalds decided to close their diners in the country. For many that was symbolic for the way Icelanders shun the capitalistic powers in Iceland following the crisis. Besides, the McDonalds menu didn't really fit the diet of skyr, blueberries and rotten shark tha…

Lumino City

This is amazing: Lumino City is a hand-made videogame.

In this playable narrative, you take up the role of a little girl looking for her granddad, in a beautifully crafted paper world.

The game's creators built up an entire paper city, animated by with engines and LED lights. It was then filmed and seamlessly overlaid with interactive elements and characters.

The end result is utterly stunning.

Arts people of the Internet listen up!

We are gearing up for our next amazing exhibition: The Image, Transposed.

We want to look at the role of images in the internet, particularly social media and with emphasis on the Tumblr network of artists.

And we'd like to hear from you. Do you follow any artists/designers/makers on tumblr?

Here's four fantastic artists working with images in very different ways:
- The Dot is Black: http://thedotisblack.tumblr.com
- Davy Mattt: http://blog.dayvmattt.com/
- Jessie Tatcher: http://jessiethatcher.tumblr.com/
- A-na5: http://a-na5.tumblr.com

Because, what is an Image? It's not the same it used to be 30 years ago. Heck, it's not the same it used to be 10 years ago!

Let us know what you think, and any shout out and suggestions!

“ “ The Random Darknet Shopper, an automated online shopping bot with a budget of $100 a week in Bitcoin, is programmed to do a very specific task: go to one particular marketplace on the Deep Web and make one random purchase a week with the provided allowance. The purchases have all been compiled for an art show in Zurich, Switzerland titled The Darknet: From Memes to Onionland, which runs through January 11.

The concept would be all gravy if not for one thing: the programmers came home one day to find a shipment of 10 ecstasy pills, followed by an apparently very legit falsified Hungarian passport– developments which have left some observers of the bot’s blog a little uneasy.

If this bot was shipping to the U.S., asks Forbes contributor and University of Washington law professor contributor Ryan Calo, who would be legally responsible for purchasing the goodies? The coders? Or the bot itself?

Today, the latest digital exhibition on the Online Museum opens.

Hyperspatialism: Space, Geography and the Internet

Exploring space through language and description, the exhibition wonders between volume and void; between the sculptural forms of Jan Robert Leegt (NL), Nicolas Sasson (FR) and Clement Valla (US) and the psycogeography of JODI (NL), Olia Lialina (RU) and Jeroen Van Loon (NL).

Come and have a look at how media artists are exploring our increasingly metaphorical relationship with the physical environment:

Hyperspatialism: Space, Geography and the Internet.

The latest exhibition at the online museum explores Hyperspatialism: a concept to describe sculptural and geophysical volumes through abstraction, inspired by Jan Robert Leegt's Hypermaterialist sculptures and Marc Augé's non-spatial modernity; building on the Spatialism of Lucio Fontana and Dadamaiano.

Joan and Dirk from JODI are back to OM, this time exploring geography through internet vernacular, in their intensely layered Geo Goo from 2008.

This comprehensive compendium of formalist interventions onto he Google Maps interface looks at the past, the present and the future, and questions the status quo of cartography. Definitely worth spending some time clicking through the numerous pages.
