About: “Key Performance Indicators is a series of site-specific works examining the human desire to notate and quantify our surroundings. In this iteration at Westward Ho!, North Devon, a series of images documents the measurement of rocks with a standard tape measure. An act of folly, considering the sheer volume and diversity of these rocks at this site. The resulting digital collage shifts the individual images from documentation of process towards a collective aesthetic outcome. Divergences in scale and linearity become points of interest as do material contrasts. Ultimately, the rocks themselves may not care for these key performance indicators.

About: Within my practice, I have a preference for working with collage. This is usually drawn from magazines and found images. This piece departs from that method by using original photography. A relaxed image of my sister is printed on paper and glued on plywood, cut into three hinged sections. The hinges allow the panels to be reconfigured, though once installed the work is static. The hinges signal the idea of movement rather than performing it. It exists in two versions with slightly different images, one roughly 1.5 times life size and the other half life size. The image borrows its references from Y2K magazines, gossip columns, spa imagery and advertising.

About: “This photopolymer etching is based on a carved stone discovered in a London woodland, whose origin remains under investigation. Removed from its context, the object occupies an ambiguous space between archaeological artefact, ritual object and geological form.

The image explores the point where observation gives way to imagination. By isolating the object, the work invites viewers to construct their own narratives, questioning how meaning emerges from fragments, uncertainty and the act of looking.”

About: “Celebration of Individuality is a sculptural object that incorporates the function of a single-flower vase, reflecting on the beauty of individuality in both flowers and people.

Even within the same species, each flower has its own distinct character, expressed through the colours and shapes of its petals, leaves and stem. Yet when flowers are seen as part of a group, these individual qualities are often overlooked. I see a similar tendency in human society, where people are frequently recognised through broad categories such as nationality, age, workplace or school, rather than through their inner qualities, dreams, values and ways of thinking.

This work was created to draw attention to the quiet beauty of one flower, allowing it to stand alone and be fully seen. Lines made from bicycle spokes converge towards the flower, while curved steel sheets form a partial sphere around it; together, these elements guide the viewer’s gaze towards the single bloom at the centre. By framing a single bloom in this way, the object becomes a small celebration of singular presence, encouraging a more attentive and compassionate appreciation of individuality in everyday life.”

About: “Trees are not solitary objects but physiologically integrated communities whose lives are organised through roots and shared fungal networks (Wohlleben, 2016; Simard, 2021). Dendrophonia (Tree sounds) focuses on visualising tree roots to facilitate the storytelling of their communication. Beyond producing ~28% of our oxygen and absorbing CO2, trees participate in complex signalling through mycorrhizal networks spanning entire forests where they share carbohydrates and nutrients with stressed neighbours, recognise kin, and transmit defence cues (Wohlleben, 2016; Simard, 2021).

Using lumen prints, I place root material, soil and fungal residues directly onto photosensitive paper. Light and chemistry create indexical traces of contact rather than descriptive images, mirroring the slow reciprocity of underground networks where roots and fungi dissolve boundaries between trees.

This is no metaphor. Studies demonstrate plasticity and learning in root systems and behaviour that, in its complexity, invites comparison with animal societies (Simard et al., 2012; Simard, 2021; Wohlleben, 2016). As Dioum states, “We will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand...” (Dioum, 1968). Dendrophonia renders these subterranean networks visible to invite viewers to learn more and perhaps conserve.“
