La storia dell'arte è una scienza autonoma che ha il compito di ricercare e illustrare tutti i fatti che hanno reso comprensibile lo sviluppo del Kunstwollen umano, nel suo nesso causale. Tutto ciò che va fuori da ciò non fa parte della storia dell'arte. Le opere d'arte sono anche monumenti della evoluzione culturale, e spesso ci illuminano sulla evoluzione di usi sociali, forme di vita e rapporti

economici. Questi punti di vista non fanno parte della storia dell'arte ma della storia della cultura, della sociologia, della storia economica ecc... ma spesso è proprio da questa scienza diversa che giungono le soluzioni del vero problema storico – artistico. Sappiamo che generali fenomeni culturali operano sulla evoluzione artistica creando le premesse esteriori per i fenomeni artistici, il cui reale contenuto però, parliamo della forma artistica, dello stile, del travaglio artistico, può essere fatto derivare da quelle premesse ma preannuncia sempre delle linee autonome di sviluppo genetico, linee che tocca alla storia dell'arte spiegare. I nuovi compiti della storia dell'arte. La storia dell'arte ha dunque il compito specifico di analizzare la storia delle forme e dello stile. Il carattere stilistico, dice, rappresenta l'aspetto dello sviluppo artistico che scorre eternamente, che si rispecchia in vario modo nelle diverse individualità artistiche, ed è legato indissolubilmente e inimitabilmente ad una precisa epoca ed ad un preciso, locale, personale mutamento dell'arte. Por si necesitabas flores hoy 🫱

Este cuadro estuvo perdido por siglos, hasta hoy.

La artista francesa, Anne Vallayer-Coster, estaba en la cima de su carrera cuando creó esta obra en 1783, pintando para clientes tan famosos como la Reina María Antonieta.

A pesar de las muchas ofertas que le llegaron de comprar esta naturaleza mu**ta, Vallayer-Coster las rechazó todas. Le fue tan importante que se la quedó hasta que falleció en 1818. Años después, un pariente de la artista la compró en una subasta, y desde ese momento se desapareció de la vista pública.

“Conocíamos el cuadro, pero no sabíamos dónde estaba”, dijo Aaron Wile, nuestro curador asociado de pintura francesa.

Por fin, tras siglos, reapareció, y ahora vive en nuestro museo.

Just in case you need flowers today 🫱

This painting was lost for centuries, until now.

Back in the 1700s, a woman named Anne Vallayer-Coster created this work at the height of her career. She was a star in her time, with clients like Queen Marie Antoinette.

Many people wanted to buy this painting, but Vallayer-Coster refused every offer. It meant something to her—so much so, she kept it in her personal collection until she died. Years later, a family member bought it at auction...and then it vanished from public view.

“We knew about the painting, but we didn’t know where it was,” says Aaron Wile, associate curator of French paintings.

Now, it’s finally reappeared—and it’s now on view in our West Building.
