Charitable trust set up to promote modern Middle Eastern and Arab art and culture, focusing on Palestine.

The P21 Gallery is an ambitious project in the making, to be an independent London-based non-profit making organisation set up to promote modern Arab art and culture with special focus on Palestine. The gallery is located in architect-designed premises in the heart of London’s Kings Cross, near the British Library. It provides contemporary display spaces and installation areas with facilities to b

e used for a range of public functions, from presenting art and performance to running workshops and exhibits for training and education. The gallery has a reference library, meeting room, lecture space and a café. In spite of political and logistical difficulties, Arabs in general and Palestinians in particular see their artistic and cultural activities as one of the binding forces that give Arab societies their identity at a time of fragmentation. But an awareness of the quality and variety of Arab art and culture is absent from Western society. The P21 Gallery will provide a showcase for these activities, bringing Arab artists and their work before a British audience. London is the centre of a thriving modern and contemporary art scene and Arab artists can contribute to that scene through work, which is comparable with – and yet different from – the best contemporary artists in the UK.

New Children's Book: The Donkey who Carried the War on her Back

Zahra is a young donkey who lives with her owner, Sami, in Gaza City, Palestine, where they go about their daily routines. One day, a devastating war takes place. Through Zahra’s eyes and voice, we celebrate life, friendship, resilience and hope in the darkest times. Donkeys are the unsung heroes of this war.

Maisara Baroud 'Still Alive'

How do artists in Gaza continue producing art, when their studios, universities and materials are bombed, and life is a struggle for survival? For artist Maisara Baroud it is the way he informs the world “I am still alive”.

In October 2023, when rockets hit his home and studio were bombed in Gaza City, Baroud lost his art library, manuscripts, sketches, dozens of paintings and tools. However, as reality drastically changed, he obtained a pencil and some paper and began to tirelessly draw. These drawings document displacement, brutal bombardment, the fear of loss, and the anxiety of protecting loved ones.

captures daily scenes and shares them with family and friends as much as he can amid communication blackouts and the collapse of technology. Baroud sees his practice as a challenge to the borders and barriers placed by the occupation: a declaration of survival and a declaration that “Gaza, despite its wounds, is still able to give.” Baroud’s works bear sharp witness to the reality and tragedy endured by all Palestinians, while articulating how his own personal life is now consumed by the struggle to survive.

“The university at which I work as a lecturer has disappeared and lies in ashes. The war machine has distorted the features of my small city and the occupation has destroyed all the beautiful things in it; so the things that are fixed in my memory now lie distorted under the rubble.”

This distortion is palpable in ‘Still Alive:’ a series of 16 acrylic and ink drawings, each with their own individual titles. ‘Still Alive’ features in our exhibition ‘Art of Palestine | from the river to the sea,” alongside works from over 25 other Palestinian artists.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Mohammed Alhaj

We are delighted to showcase a selection of work by .alhaj.000 in our current exhibition “Art of Palestine | from the river to the sea”. A stark trio of drawings: Means of Transportation, Searching for a Safe Haven, and School’s Out, evoke experiences of daily life in Gaza defined, disrupted or destroyed by occupation. Meanwhile, Alhaj’s large-scale painting Immigration examines the processes and psychologies of transit in a foreign land as he outlines the realities of mass displacement in Palestine, posing the question of how and when will it end?

Mohammed Alhaj is a young artist from Gaza. Holding a degree in Fine Art from Al-Aqsa University, his work spans stylistic modes but is always underpinned by Arabian and Palestinian spirit. Alhaj has been exhibited in and outside Palestine, while he continues to endure life cut off from the rest of his country and the Arab world.

"The challenges imposed upon the Palestinian artists are very complex and difficult since it suffers not only from a constant war, but also siege, division and disintegration" says Alhaj.

Artwork Images:

Means of Transportation (2021): The horse-drawn cart became the main form of transportation due to the running out of fuel and gasoline and the high cost of operating carts. They became a regular sight after the war of 2008-2009.

School’s Out (2021): Returning from school and the dialogue that takes place between students coming and going has become one of the memories of Gaza, whose children have been deprived of knowledge and learning. Two school years have now been cancelled since October 2023.

Searching for a Safe Haven (2021): Searching for a safe haven by moving from one place to another without knowing a specific path.

ON VIEW: Scenes from the Palestinian History Tapestry

The Palestinian History Tapestry Project uses the embroidery skills of Palestinian women to illustrate aspects of the lands and peoples of Palestine — from the Neolithiera to the present. While the tapestry aims to preserve and commemorate Palestinian history and culture, it also draws attention to the internationally declared right of Palestinians to return to their homes. Each panel is hand crafted and the names of contributors are followed by the location of their family homes at the time of the Nakba (1948). The History Tapestry Project empowers Palestinian women to take part in income generation and tell their own stories. Their work is an expression of 'sumud’ (steadfastness).

Selected panels from the Palestinian History Tapestry feature in our exhibition “Art of Palestine | from the river to the sea."

Stills from Jarrah by Jonathan Farr

Jarrah is a stop motion animation based on footage taken of children in Gaza since October 2023. The animation was created by painting water onto a ceramic pot made in the form of a Palestinian jarrah: a pot often used for water in rural areas and a symbol of day-to-day life in Palestine. The whole film lasts 1:42 mins but is designed to be viewed looped 1000 times, which would take about 20 hours. Jarrah is intended to represent the estimated number of 15,000 children killed in Gaza by the IDF since October 2023, at the time of making the animation. The number has since risen.

is a multidisciplinary artist from London, whose work is rooted in drawing and observation. Among other awards, Jonathan’s animations have been screened in the London Raindance Festival, Edinburgh Short Film Festival, This is England Festival and the Animafantasia Festival. He created Jarrah in protest of the killing of so many children at the hands of the IDF, and the impunity given to Netanyahu and his government by Western countries.

Music: “Gaza” by Saied Silbak with accompanying vocals from Rola Milad Azar

Jarrah is a new addition to “Art of Palestine | from the river to the sea,” on now at P21 Gallery!

Expressions of Justice: Literature Vs. the Genocide in Gaza

As a genocide is committed in Gaza, is there a role for art and literature to play in stopping the catastrophe?

This burning question will be the launching ground for a panel discussion with Hisham Bustani and Atef Alshaer, moderated by Sarah Tamimi. Wednesday 24 July, 7pm, at P21 Gallery.

The panel will highlight some of the poetry that is coming out of Gaza today, shed a light on its artistic scene, and present readings on and from the genocide.
