"I love this time of year, leaves turning gold and conkers flying as bright green parakeets head up to roost in my local park. What’s been on my mind recently? I’ve been thinking a lot about our relationship with nature, ecology, and our natural resources. And, how the natural world is so often undervalued and overlooked in the city context. More positively, though, I’ve been getting excited about the opportunity for London to harness nature’s super-powers, to tackle air quality, improve our mental health, sequester carbon, and support urban resilience".

"September is a good month for open water swimming. I really enjoy Love Open Water based in the Royal Victoria Docks just next door to the new City Hall. Swimmers are surrounded by the city at is most eccentric. Views from the surprisingly choppy water include the Cable Car, the O2 Centre and Docklands Light Railway. Switch to backstroke and you can see the planes leaving London City Airport".

"2022 marks for many the first year being able to return to ‘normal’ life and events – whatever normal may mean for you. Amongst the difficulties, the last two years have sparked many much needed conversations in our industry and beyond. Yet, many conversations have remained as just that.

With the return of the London Festival of Architecture and the years theme of ‘act’, we hope both organisers and audience will be encouraged to mobilise beyond conversations as well as re-think what architecture is, who it is for and how we interact with it.

As always, the LFA programme is people-led and curated by event organisers from across the city. I have been heartened by groups and individuals who have continued to present alternative visions and possibilities for the future - not only of the ways in which we practice architecture and design, but for the very foundation of how our societies are structured.

My selection of events for this month encourages us to welcome paradigm shifts - to embrace an evolution towards a more holistic perspective that opens new possibilities. They look back to help us define our present. And finally, they are characterised by "possibilism" - the idea that change is possible and all of us have agency in making it happen...”

I was invited to contribute to London Architecture Diary at the start of December when Omicron was yet to take its hold. As such, nearly four weeks later, I am writing this from my Covid-positive household and many of my top cultural picks have either sadly been delayed or cancelled.

Now feeling like we’re back to square one and with the situation being a moving target, I’ve selected a variety of events and exhibitions with the hope that at least one will go ahead…"

's Editor's Choice for December comes from Jason Sayer, writer and Network Coordinator at the London School of Architecture.

"For what has been a tumultuous 2021, a great many are hungry for the festive feast of events that December always brings, deprived of the chance to gorge last year. Ahead of this month, it’s also right we remember the late architect and fashion designer, Virgil Abloh, who passed away at the end of November, and take the chance to view what’s upcoming this month with his perspective in mind.

“Young architects can change the world by not building buildings,” Abloh said at a lecture at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation in 2017. This was not a call to dismiss design, rather, it highlighted the horrific carbon implications the process of building inflicts upon the planet and pushed us to make the most of, as well as adapt and improve what we have — which the events here aim to highlight".

But let’s consider ourselves lucky to be able to enjoy some architectural inspiration, and this month there is plenty to choose from – both real and virtual – and much of it is free to access. The much anticipated COP26 summit is finally upon us between 31 October and 12 November and I’m sure we will all be absorbed in world leaders’ decisions, and engaged in seeing how we can do our part in combatting the climate emergency''.

"October may be universally known as the month of the dead, but I personally feel that October in London is anything but dead. London is back and is jam-packed with cultural events. We finally have endless possibilities of socialising and networking, whatever the weather! When I was asked to be the guest editor for October, I started thinking about the infinite cultural opportunities London offers and how much I’ve missed the arts and culture scene throughout the pandemic. London is truly one of the greatest places to live in, and this October to me feels like an appropriate celebration of its architecture, design and art".
