On view ✨Sokari Douglas Camp: Fashion & Fortune
🗓️ Until Saturday, 27th June, 2026

In her latest solo exhibition, internationally renowned artist and sculptor Sokari Douglas Camp CBE presents large and small-scale steel sculptures alongside a selection of prints.

Through intricate metal figures, elaborate headdresses, and the incorporation of coins, the artist highlights both the oppression embedded in colonial systems and the creativity with which marginalised people reasserted identity and status.

In his striking new paintings, Eddy Kamuanga reflects on the enduring legacies of colonial exploitation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The works draw on the period in which King Leopold II of Belgium tasked European naturalists with cataloguing local fauna and flora, while experimenting on ‘exotic species’ to increase their economic potential. An entire economy developed around the extraction of rubber — often referred to as ‘red rubber’ because of the brutal violence associated with its production — forcing native labourers to harvest it from vines deep within the forests. Kamuanga also references the cultivation of non-native crops such as cotton and coffee, tracing how these systems reshaped both the environment and everyday life.

Despite these histories, the paintings are grounded in resilience. Through their scale and contemplative stillness, Kamuanga’s figures honour the strength and endurance of local communities.

🗓️ ‘Inheriting the Future’ continues until Saturday, 16th May, 2026

Last Friday, we celebrated Aubrey Williams’ centenary on what would have been his birthday with a special gathering at October Gallery ✨

The evening featured a live performance by musician and composer Keith Waithe, presented in tribute to his old friend.

On display were rarely seen works by the artist, alongside archival photographs, a screening of ‘Mark of the Hand’ and a selection of books and catalogues exploring Williams’ life and practice.

We are grateful to Ripley Wines for providing welcome drinks for the occasion 🥂

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the evening so memorable, and to all who joined us in celebrating Williams’ life and legacy!

Last week to see 💫
Featuring works by Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, Djibril Dramé, Alexis Peskine and Zana Masombuka.

🗓️ On view until Saturday, 16th May, 2026

Working across distinct media and approaches, the four artists consider how identity, memory and cultural inheritance are shaped within rapidly changing social environments. Through painting, sculpture and photography, the exhibition reflects on the tensions between local histories and the expanding influence of contemporary global monoculture.

Today, we celebrate the remarkable art, vision and legacy of Aubrey Williams .

Born in Guyana in 1926, Williams developed a powerful visual language that moved between abstraction and figuration, grounded in a profound awareness of humanity’s relationship to the environment, history and the cosmos.

After arriving in London in 1952, he became a founding member of the Caribbean Artists Movement — a pivotal network of artists and intellectuals who reshaped the city’s cultural landscape.

Spanning ecology, cosmology and pre-colonial histories, his visionary work continues to resonate powerfully.

With powerful new works from her series, 'Akhulumile Amabhudango: Scenes from Dreams – Journeys with the Kosabo', Zana Masombuka ndebelesuperhero navigates a liminal terrain between the physical and spiritual worlds, investigating themes of kingship, ascension and ancestral guidance. This body of work pays homage to her late maternal grandfather, Bishop Makhuwana Piet Mahlangu, whose life and spiritual legacy serve as its inspiration.

Through photography, beaded sculptural frames and symbolic objects drawn from Ndebele culture, Masombuka constructs a visual tour de force that explores the interrelation of lineage, destiny and sacred realms.
