We have added to our collection this beautiful Antique Roman Micromosaic Brooch Depicting the Colosseum
In the Manner of Cesare Roccheggiani (Rome, Active Second Half 19th Century)

🎨 Subject & Medium
A fine antique Grand Tour 19th century Roman micromosaic brooch depicting the iconic Colosseum of Rome, circa 1870, executed in minute hand-cut varicoloured glass tesserae and mounted in unmarked high-carat yellow gold, likely 15ct, within a black surround, preserved in a fitted presentation case.
Created during the height of the Grand Tour era, the brooch captures one of the Eternal City’s most celebrated architectural monuments with remarkable precision and artistic sensitivity.

🧩 Composition & Technique
The mosaic is composed of extraordinarily fine tesserae — individually cut and laid by hand — demonstrating the sophisticated craftsmanship associated with the leading Roman micromosaic workshops of the nineteenth century.
Particularly notable is the architectural rendering:
the careful perspective of the Colosseum,
subtle tonal gradations within the stonework,
and the atmospheric sky achieved through densely arranged pale tesserae.
The black surround provides dramatic visual contrast, intensifying both the luminosity of the mosaic and the warmth of the gold mount.
The quality of ex*****on places this example materially above ordinary tourist micromosaics of the period.

🎖️ Admire our latest arrival Oil Portrait Study of General in Chief “Robert E. Lee” Commander of the Armies of the Confederate States

🖼️ Subject & Medium
An atmospheric and finely executed cabinet-sized oil portrait painting depicting Confederate General Robert E. Lee in later life, attributed to contemporary American painter Daniel Robbins Circa 2018. Executed in oil on hardboard with expressive painterly brushwork and sophisticated tonal handling, the portrait captures Lee with introspective dignity and remarkable psychological presence.
The artist employs richly textured impasto, nuanced facial modelling and carefully balanced harmonies of cool greys, warm ochres and muted cream highlights to create a work possessing both historical gravitas and strong decorative elegance. The intimate scale recalls nineteenth-century private portrait studies and oil sketches intended for close viewing.
Medium: Oil on hardboard
Image size: 22 cm high × 17 cm wide
Frame size: 31.5 cm high × 26.5 cm wide × 3 cm deep

⚔️ Historical Context
General Robert Edward Lee (1807–1870) remains one of the most recognised and historically significant military figures in nineteenth-century America. Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia and later General in Chief of Confederate forces during the American Civil War, Lee achieved international military recognition through campaigns including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and the Seven Days Battles.
His image became deeply embedded within American historical portraiture following iconic Civil War-era photographic studies by Mathew Brady and other nineteenth-century photographers. Throughout the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, artists repeatedly interpreted Lee in paintings, prints and commemorative portraiture, establishing him as one of the defining visual figures of American military history.
The present portrait continues that tradition through a contemporary expressive realist interpretation that focuses less upon political symbolism and more upon memory, character and historical reflection.

🍓Equine Masterpiece in Oil — A Gentleman’s Hunter Strawberry Grey Roan Horse in Stable with Terrier Circle of Edwin Frederick Holt (c.1885)

🎨 Subject & Medium
Rendered in oil on canvas, this atmospheric Victorian sporting interior portrays a distinguished strawberry grey roan gentleman’s hunter standing calmly within a rustic timber stable, accompanied by an attentive terrier seated faithfully at its feet. The composition evokes the quiet dignity and refined character of the late Victorian sporting tradition, capturing a moment of stillness either before the hunt or after the day’s ride.
The strawberry grey roan colouring — both uncommon and visually captivating — is handled with notable sensitivity, lending the horse individuality, elegance, and unmistakable equestrian presence. The accompanying terrier introduces warmth and narrative charm, symbolising loyalty, companionship, and the close relationship between sporting animals and their owners in 19th-century Britain.

✍️ Composition & Technique
The composition is thoughtfully arranged, balancing the commanding presence of the hunter with the lively intimacy of the terrier. Warm stable tones of ochre, burnt umber, and muted straw create a softly illuminated interior that enhances the painting’s calm and authentic atmosphere.
The handling and painterly qualities strongly correspond with works associated with the circle of Edwin Frederick Holt:

🏷️ Lord Hill’s Bridge W2 – Original City of Westminster Enamel Street Sign with Certificate (Sir Misha Black Design, c.1967)

Subject & Medium 🎨
A genuine City of Westminster enamelled iron street sign, inscribed “LORD HILL’S BRIDGE W2”, originally mounted within one of London’s most historically significant boroughs.
Constructed using vitreous enamel on steel, this piece represents the highest standard of mid-20th century municipal manufacture — engineered for longevity, visibility, and resilience. Today, it stands not just as signage, but as a collectible artefact of British urban heritage, combining industrial craft with iconic graphic design.

Composition & Technique ✏️
The sign’s layout is a textbook example of modernist information design, balancing clarity with visual authority:
Bold black sans-serif lettering for the street name
Distinctive red “W2” postcode marker, creating immediate visual hierarchy
Institutional “City of Westminster” footer in matching red
This format was meticulously designed for legibility in urban environments — readable at distance, in motion, and under varied lighting conditions.
The vitreous enamel process — firing powdered glass onto steel at high temperature — produces a hard, glossy, and weather-resistant surface. Over decades of outdoor exposure, the sign has developed:
Organic enamel losses
Layered scratches and abrasions
Rust bleed and oxidised edges
These features now enrich the piece visually, giving it a depth and authenticity that cannot be artificially reproduced. sign

Period George III London Assurance Britannia Plaque, Hallmarked Sterling Silver, Hallmarked Robert Hennell I & David Hennell II 🏛️

Subject & Medium 🖌️
Sterling silver A finely cast and chased plaque depicting an allegorical female figure—Britannia or Assurance—seated with classical attributes including shield, staff, and harp, beneath the inscription “LONDON ASSURANCE” and numbered “13”. Approximate weight 7.8ozt 243 grams equivalent.

Composition & Technique 🧠
Executed in high relief, the composition presents a seated classical figure symbolising protection, stability, and maritime strength. The drapery is fluid and carefully modelled, while surrounding elements—including the shield, harp, and ground—are rendered with clarity and balance.
The surface displays refined chasing and subtle textural variation, with polished highlights contrasting against deeper recessed areas. This interplay enhances depth and gives the plaque a sculptural, medallion-like presence characteristic of fine London silverwork of the Georgian period.

About the Makers 🎭
The maker’s mark, reading RH over DH, is consistent with that used by Robert Hennell I (c.1741–1811) and his son David Hennell II (1763–1839), members of one of the most respected London silversmithing families of the late Georgian period.
The Hennells were active in London from the mid-18th century and are recorded as working from Foster Lane, a centre of high-quality goldsmithing. The partnership of Robert Hennell I and David Hennell II is particularly associated with the turn of the 19th century, a period marked by refined neoclassical design and increasing demand for both domestic and institutional silver.

Enjoy this masterpiece Oil Portrait of King Charles II Wearing the Royal Garter 🎨
English School, 19th century, circa 1850, after Sir Peter Lely (1618–1680)

A 19th-century masterpiece interpretation of Sir Peter Lely’s iconic portrait of Charles II, reflecting the Victorian revival of royal imagery and enduring fascination with Britain’s Restoration court.

Subject & Medium 🖌️
A 19th-century oil portrait, circa 1850, depicting King Charles II in armour, incorporating elements associated with the Order of the Garter—an enduring symbol of royal authority and chivalric tradition.
Composition & Technique 🧠
The King is presented in a three-quarter orientation, his gaze outward and composed. He wears a full periwig, armour, and a white cravat, with a suspended insignia referencing the Order of the Garter.
The palette is subdued and tonal, dominated by deep browns, blacks, and warm undertones typical of 19th-century interpretations of earlier Old Master compositions. These darker passages allow the flesh tones and the luminous white cravat to stand forward, while restrained highlights across the armour create a sense of depth and form.
The handling reflects a later interpretation, with soft modelling in the face and broader, more economical treatment elsewhere. The sitter’s expression conveys measured authority and calm restraint, consistent with idealised royal imagery.

About the Sitter 👑
King Charles II (1630–1685) was born at St James’s Palace, London, the eldest son of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria. His early life was shaped by the English Civil War, culminating in his father’s ex*****on in 1649.
He spent years in exile across Europe and attempted to reclaim the throne, most notably at the Battle of Worcester (1651). Following defeat, he famously escaped capture before remaining abroad until the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660.

🖼️ “Britannia Of Åland Under Full Sail” — Capt. August Ekblom
A Documented Baltic Trading Barque | After Andreas Lind, London 1869 | B. Hartvik, Mariehamn 1979

🎨 Subject & Medium
A substantial and finely executed maritime oil painting depicting the three-masted barque “Britannia of Åland,” shown under full sail and prominently inscribed with both vessel and master: Captain August Ekblom.
Painted in oil on canvas in Mariehamn (Åland) in 1979 by B. Hartvik, this work faithfully follows an original composition painted from life in London in 1869 by the noted marine artist Andreas Gundersen Lind. The painting sits firmly within the Northern European tradition of documentary ship portraiture, where vessels were recorded with precision, pride, and technical understanding.

🖌️ Composition & Technique
The vessel is presented in strict profile—a defining feature of professional 19th-century marine portraiture—allowing full and accurate representation of the ship’s structure, rigging, and sail plan.
The Britannia is shown on a starboard tack, moving left to right, a compositional convention symbolising forward motion and successful passage.
The artist demonstrates strong observational control through:
Precisely articulated standing and running rigging
Clear structural definition of masts and spars
Subtle tonal modelling across sails, suggesting wind pressure and canvas tension
The restrained treatment of sea and sky reflects the documentary intent of the composition, ensuring the vessel remains the central focus. #

Our favourite now available for sale 🏛️ Historical American President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945) — Signed Mid-Century Watercolour Portrait Painting by Beatrice S. Bullock (1878–1953), Fully Inscribed Verso with Birmingham Address, Period Price & Exhibition History

Subject and Medium 🎨
An original circa early 1940’s mid-20th century watercolour on paper portrait of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, executed by British artist Beatrice S. Bullock.
A unique, hand-painted work capturing the likeness of one of America’s most influential presidents at the height of his global recognition.

Composition & Technique 🖌️
Roosevelt is presented in a composed three-quarter bust, turned slightly toward the viewer, creating an immediate yet dignified presence. His posture is upright but relaxed—suggesting confidence without stiffness, and authority without distance.
He is depicted wearing a dark formal suit jacket, crisp white shirt, and a patterned bow tie, an ensemble closely associated with his public image during the 1930s–40s. The inclusion of his pince-nez spectacles is particularly significant, reinforcing both the period accuracy and the instantly recognisable character of the sitter.
The artist captures Roosevelt’s facial expression with notable sensitivity:
A gentle, controlled smile conveys reassurance and quiet optimism
The eyes, alert behind the spectacles, suggest intelligence and attentiveness
The overall expression balances warmth with authority—neither overly formal nor casual
This is not a distant or ceremonial likeness; rather, it presents Roosevelt as a calm, composed leader, approachable yet resolute.
Technically, the work is executed with transparent watercolour washes, allowing the paper’s natural luminosity to model the face. The restrained palette and controlled brushwork are typical of mid-century British practice, favouring subtlety over theatrical effect.
