Literary Tour of London

Literary Tour of London Ladies and gentlemen, roll up one and all for the strolling tour of a lifetime! Follow in the footsteps of some of Great Britain's greatest writers!

London is a city of literature and lust, of poverty and riches, of woe and wonder. Come experience the places that inspired and were influenced by some of the greatest creators of all time, and find out more about their sometimes tragic, sometimes hilarious, often scandalous and always fascinating lives. The tour is 2 hours long from 3-5pm. Meet at the Virginia Woolf statue in Tavistock Square and look for the man in the silly hat. The nearest tube station is Russell Square or Euston Square. The tour will finish at The Globe Theatre at around 5pm, from whence you can saunter off and do as you please! Bring a camera and a brolly just in case!

Listen: how Shakespeare really sounded

This is how some people think that Shakespearean language may have sounded: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/booknews/9143302/How-should-Shakespeare-really-sound.html

Do you enjoy Shakespeare, or is his work just much ado about nothing? We'd like to pay tribute to him on the day that he died 399 years ago in 1616.

Listen: ever wondered how Shakespearean English was pronounced at the time? Audio files from the British Library have the answer

We are thinking of having some special events related to specific writers who lived in London, so wondered if anyone had a preference as to whom we should concentrate on? A Shakespeare Special seems like a neat idea, and also one connected to Dr Johnson, but if there are any special favourites that you feel deserve celebrating, let us know!

Highgate Cemetery - Douglas Adams - Highgate Cemetery Photo Gallery

Since we've now got 42 likers, it seems only right and proper to post a link to the great, sadly-departed Douglas Noel Adams. Unfortunately the tour doesn't reach Islington where DNA lived, but he gets an honourable mention as one of Britain's best-loved and most hilarious writers.

If you want to visit any locations connected to Douglas Adams, his gravestone can be found at Highgate Cemetary: http://golondon.about.com/od/londonpictures/ig/Highgate-Cemetery/Douglas-Adams.htm

(along with Karl Marx, Malcolm Maclaren and Jeremy Beadle, according to this post, although Beadle's resting place may be a cunning prank).

Adams lived in Islington on Duncan Terrace, N1 8AL, details of which can be found here: http://www.onthisveryspot.com/find/spot.php?spot_web_name=Douglas_Adams_Home

And finally, here is a little bit of amusing information on the origins of the name 'Slartibartfast' from Wikipedia, which is about the closest thing that humans can get to the Hitch-hiker's Guide at present, isn't it?: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slartibartfast

Don't Panic, and keep reading Douglas Adams' books!

Highgate Cemetery in north London opened in 1839 and is the final resting place of many famous names such as Karl Marx, Malcolm McLaren and Jeremy Beadle. Enjoy these photos and find more about how to visit.
