British Art Fair

British Art Fair BRITISH ART FAIR 2023 | 32nd Edition | 28 September to 1 October 2023 | Saatchi Gallery London. The result is a niche event of the highest quality.

Founded in 1988, British Art Fair is the only fair dedicated to Modern and contemporary British art. Each year, fifty leading dealers exhibit paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures covering all the important artistic movements of the past 100 years: from the early modernists to the YBAs to contemporary street art. Most of the great names of 20th century British art are represented: Bomberg, F

reud, Frink, Frost, Hepworth, Hockney, Lowry, Moore, Nash, Piper, Riley, Spencer and Sutherland alongside contemporary names such as Grayson Perry, Banksy and many others of the 21st century. Much of the work is privately sourced and fresh to the market and dealers keep work back for the fair. NEXT EDITION: Autumn 2023, Saatchi Gallery, London (TBA)

The Scottish artist Charles Hodge Mackie had a fruitful love affair with Venice, and made several extended visits to the ‘La Serenissima’ between 1908 and 1914, creating many works which significantly enhanced his reputation.

One of which was his most successful woodcut that featured the famous Palladio-designed wooden bridge. It is based on an intricate watercolour he painted of the bridge in 1911, which he used as the basis for a series of woodcuts in c1915.

You can admire his work at the Fine Art Society’s latest exhibition, titled Twentieth Century, at their London gallery and read more on his practice in our new News piece, linked here-

We asked Modern British Art expert, James Rawlin for highlights from our upcoming fair - luckily, he was able to squeeze us in.

James has worked with Modern British art for over 30 years, overseeing landmark auctions at Phillips and Sotheby’s and curating several significant exhibitions. Alongside writing and lecturing, he now works as an independent curator and advisor with his wife, Jessica. Over to James…

“British Art Fair a favourite of mine and I’m delighted to share a few gems which you might find interesting.
There is no doubting Henry Moore’s position as a big beast of Modern British art. Along with Barbara Hepworth he was at the forefront of Britain’s mid-century sculpture renaissance and his works are in collections worldwide. In photos and films, he seems a rather avuncular and quiet chap, working away in his studio making sculptures such as this wonderful Family Group.
But like a lot of artists, Moore had a steelier, more competitive edge under the surface. Michael Ayrton’s drawing of his friend and fellow sculptor, caught in action playing table-tennis, shows us not only how the hand/eye coordination an artist needs can help here, but also the will to win. Moore hated to be beaten in the long-running series of games they played and this drawing, from 1966, dates to the years when the two artists were jointly authoring a book on Giovanni Pisano, the C13th Italian sculptor. Ayrton even included the score, with Moore winning easily!
Moore’s contemporary Ben Nicholson was also keenly competitive and they too fought it out on the table-tennis table, even inventing their own version known as Hazard Pong!
Works like this bring a name off the page and to life, reminding us that a lofty reputation should not obscure the real human qualities every artist has and which as collectors, it is great to explore.

Family Group will be shown by Willoughby Gerrish and Henry Moore Playing Table-Tennis by Christopher Kingzett.”

More highlights from James coming soon!

The ‘discovery’ of the naïve Cornish painter Alfred Wallis is a well-known tale, but the story of his sad demise, in 1942, is less commonly related. Wallis didn’t start painting until he was 70 working largely from memory at the kitchen table of his rudimentary fisherman’s cottage.

Happy birthday to the Redfern Gallery, who are celebrating their 100th anniversary with two consecutive centenary exhibitions of paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures. The first is currently on show in their Cork Street space, where the gallery has been based since 1936 (having moved from Redfern House in Old Bond Street, hence the name).

The great and the good from the ModBrit scene are included, of course, from Agar to Vaughan, as well as a handful of artists from abroad, such as Pablo Picasso and Antoni Tapies. But to illustrate this piece, writer Alex Leith has picked out a still life by Margaret Mellis, having been enchanted by a solo exhibition of the painter’s work at Towner Eastbourne a couple of years back.

Is this muscular angel falling, floating, or dancing? Perhaps all three at once.

The colourful pink-winged creature is the creation of Amy Beager, and is typical of her romantic, melodramatic, enchanting work, which transforms neo-classical figures into modern-day deities, in dayglo tones. It is titled Bobbidi, referencing The Magic Song from Cinderella, inferring a spell has been cast: rest assured we are not moving in the material world.

Beager entered the piece for the Ingram Prize 2022 (for contemporary UK artists), and was chosen as one of the four winners. As a result Bobbidi has been acquired by the Ingram Collection, and is on show at their latest exhibition.

It can be theorised that when Lisa Ivory lay awake at night as a young child, she was convinced that a monster lay drooling under her bed. Such creatures reappear in all her oil paintings: dark, shaggy beasts of vaguely humanoid form.

You can currently see the artist’s latest series of paintings at Saatchi Gallery, in the show Beyond the Gaze – Reclaiming the Landscape, curated by Zavier Ellis. The exhibition explores landscape painting through a contemporary female gaze.

15/08/2023

FCB Cadell (pronounced to rhyme with ‘paddle’) is often referred to as the ‘most Scottish’ of the four Scottish colourists, as much of his work depicted the interior of his sumptuous studio at Ainslie Place in the Georgian New Town of Edinburgh, or the landscape of the Inner Hebridean island of Iona, where he used to spend every summer. He often sported a kilt, in the Campbell tartan, albeit set off with a yellow waistcoat.

Yet Cadell was half French, and fluent in the language. As a teenager, he spent four years studying at the Academie Julian in Paris, where he was influenced by the Fauvists and the mature Impressionists.

05/08/2023

The National Portrait Gallery’s 2020 exhibition of portraits painted (and otherwise created) by David Hockney closed after just 22 days, due to governmental Covid restrictions. Hockney has since continued to invite sitters to his Normandy studio – including pop singer Harry Styles, pictured above – and 33 of these will be included in a new version of the exhibition, Drawing from Life, to be displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in November. Tickets have gone on sale this week.

The above photo, of a flat-capped, fag-in-mouth Hockney, painting the grinning Styles, is revealing of the artist’s recent methodology. He has moved back to using acrylic, after a period depicting the Normandy landscape on his iPad, painting directly onto the canvas with no under drawing. The portraits were completed in two to three sittings. On the wall hangs another in the series, of the American record producer Clive Davis, painted in May 2022. It was Davis, it seems, who suggested that Hockney should invite Styles to his studio. The 29-year-old singer was in Hockney’s wicker sitter’s chair within three weeks: he’s a fanboy of the 86-year-old artist, it turns out. Hockney, on the other hand, had never heard of the young singer, but has now ‘seen all his videos’.

Set to reopen at the National Gallery this week, Paula Rego’s monumental mural, Crivelli’s Garden.
Created thirty years ago by the late Paula Rego, the piece is placed in the same room as the art that inspired it, the predella panel of an altarpiece by 15th-century Italian artist Carlo Crivelli, known as La Madonna della Rondine (The Madonna of the Swallow).

The artwork itself stretches ten metres across and depicts female characters from the Bible, the Golden Legend (a medieval compilation of the lives of the saints) and other traditional folklore sources, reimagined through Rego’s very female gaze. These characterful women go about their business within a maze-like Portuguese garden, adorned with azulejo tiles.

Happy 125th birthday Henry Moore, sculptor, draftsman… and accomplished ping-pong player!

Moore was born on July 30 1898, in Castleford, Yorkshire. His father worked at the local pit, but was determined his seven children should pursue different careers, and Moore decided to become a sculptor at the age of 11, after studying the work of Michelangelo at Sunday School.

He went on, of course, having recovered from being gassed on the Western Front, to become one of the country’s leading modernist artists, best known for his monumental semi-abstract bronze sculptures, located worldwide. He was also an accomplished draftsman, employing a signature, scribbly style.

Art was not his only passion, however. He was also a table-tennis enthusiast, whose rivals included Ben Nicholson (against whom he played a unique variant of the game dubbed Hazard Pong) and the artist and writer Michael Ayrton. This image of a determined Henry Moore, waiting to return serve, was executed by Ayrton in 1966, at the Yorkshireman’s Italian retreat in Forte di Marmi, on the Tuscan seaside. It is in the collection of Christopher Kingzett, who will show it at British Art Fair 2023. Note the inscribed score in the caption!

Read the full story of Henry Moore's passion for ping-pong via the link below.

With only 2 months until the British Art Fair opens its doors, we thought we would take a moment to reflect on the success of last year's edition.

Thursday saw the start of the fair with our exclusive Collector’s Preview event: an opportunity to get the first look of the pieces on display.

Friday, WaterAid launched their charity auction with star studded appearances and our SOLO CONTEMPORARY section gave guests the chance to meet the artists behind the art at our inaugural ‘Meet the Artist’ evening.

The rest of the fair included highlights such as Jo Baring, of the Ingram Collection, giving a captivating talk at the launch of the much anticipated book ‘Revisiting Modern British Art’ and an inspiring exhibition from the Royal Scottish Academy.

27/07/2023

‘I can’t tell you how delicious this country is,’ wrote a 23-year-old John Craxton to his friend Elsie ‘EQ’ Nicholson, from Athens, on May 20, 1946. ‘…the lovely hot sun all day & at night tavernas: hot prawns in olive oil & great wine & the soft sweet smell of Greek pine trees. I shall never come home. How can I?’

He was meant to be in Switzerland, where he was showing a solo exhibition in a prestigious Zurich gallery, but a chance meeting at the vernissage changed all that. Lady Norton was the wife of the British ambassador to Greece, and she had a bomber aircraft waiting for her at an airfield in Milan, which she had requisitioned to pick up some Italian curtains to take back to the embassy in Athens. Did he want to come with her? Craxton loved adventure, and had been cooped up in London throughout the war. Of course he did.

London’s International Modern and Contemporary art sales at the end of June told a number of different stories.
British artists, for instance, performed well...Frank Auerbach in particular. An independent exhibition of 25 recent Auerbach self-portraits and sold out.
At Sotheby’s Auerbach's thickly encrusted, brilliantly coloured EOW on her Blue Eiderdown 1963, from the collection of Magnus Konow, was chased by adviser Nick Maclean before selling to a phone bidder well above estimate.

Our Story

Established in 1988, #BritishArtFair is the only fair to specialise in Modern and Post-War British art presenting an unrivalled section of works by 20th century giants such as: Bacon, Freud, Frink, Frost, Hepworth, Hitchens, Hockney, Hodgson, Lanyon, Lowry, Moore, Nash, Piper, Riley, Scott, Spencer and Sutherland. Alongside there is also a large selection of contemporary work by established British names from the YBA generation such as Hirst, Emin and outsider artists like Banksy. The leading dealers showing at the fair are only too happy to share their knowledge with visitors. A number exhibited at the first Fair back in 1988. Andrew Lambirth, the highly respected art critic of The Spectator wrote: 'The only art fair I make an effort not to miss is the 20/21 British Art Fair ... It's the only gathering of dealers I find really enjoyable and inspiring, with a wide range of high-quality Mod Brit on show, some of which even manages occasionally to seem affordable'.

The next Fair will be held at Saatchi Gallery 3 - 6 October 2019 .

"1964 was an eventful year for the Yorkshire artist Mark Lancaster. He was studying fine art, under pop-art guru Richard Hamilton, at King’s College, Newcastle. In his summer break, he went to New York, where he wangled a job assisting Andy Warhol in the first incarnation of The Factory, on East 87th Street. How? Here’s a lesson: he found his number in the phone book, and rang him up."

"Gillian Wearing is, of course, best known for her conceptual videos and photographs and, more recently, her sculptures. But during lockdown the Turner Prize-winning artist also turned – like other YBAs before her – to painting. And, in particular, to painting portraits."

Alex Leith refers to the current exhibition 'outer view, inner world' at Maureen Paley's Hove gallery, Morena di Luna. The show consists of 17 artists including Wearing, Wolfgang Tillmans and Lubaina Himid.
