The Guild Hall of East Hampton is one of America’s first multidisciplinary
cultural institutions. Designed by architect Aymar Embury Il and built in 1931, the art centre became particularly significant in the go’s and so’s for mounting notable exhibitions by artists such as Lee Krasner, Jackson
Po***ck, Childe Hassam, Roy Lichtenstein, Franz Kline, Robert Dash,
Fairfield Porter, Thomas Moran, and Robert Motherwell.

New Acquisition: Vertical Dogs by David Hockney
Etching and aquatint printed in colours, 1995.
Signed in pencil and numbered from the edition of 80.

In the mid 90s Hockney set out to paint a series of works that captured his two beloved dachshunds, Stanley and Boodgie. For three months, he had easels set up all over his California home to be able to sketch and paint the dogs quickly and in their natural poses. This intense period resulted in several prints, of which Vertical Dogs is one, and a series of 45 paintings titled Dog Days, which were exhibited at Yorkshire’s Salts Mill in 1995.

Électricité by Man Ray, 1931.
Ten rayographs by Man Ray printed in photogravure, each signed in the negative and mounted to large sheets of card as issued.

This work was commissioned by a French electric company
(La Compagnie Parisienne de Distribution d’Électricité) to promote and publicise the use of electricity. The portfolio consists of 1o photogravures made from Man Ray’s original rayographs; each rayograph makes use of some electrical device in the home. The conception is brilliant and the images among the most direct and uncontrived in Man Ray’s oeuvre. Electricité is also notable as Man Ray’s last intensive investigation of the rayograph process.

Each 26 × 20cm (10 I/4 × 7 7/8in) or with mount 37-4 × 27.6cm (143/4×107/8in); text inserts, including introductory text by Pierre Bost, all contained in folio folder; from the edition of joo, numbered.
Published by La Compagnic Parisienne de Distribution d’Electricité, Paris.

The female torso in two of the images is that of Lee Miller, who was at the time Man Ray’s partner, collaborator and muse. The following year, in 1932, Miller left her personal and professional relationship with Man Ray, and Électricité remains the most lasting testament to their work together.

Ben Nicholson met Angela Verren Taunt at a Christmas party in Cambridge on 29 December 1971. Angela, a gifted painter in her own right and long-time admirer of Nicholson’s work, became his studio assistant in the early 70’s. They developed a close friendship and occasionally collaborated on artistic projects, and Angela’s support and creative input played a crucial role in the final decade of Nicholson’s life.

New Acquisitions: 5 Joan Miró etchings from 1950 🧩

In 1950, Miró was invited by Aimé Maeght to produce several etched New Year’s cards for Galerie Maeght. Maeght and Miró had previously worked together when the gallery commissioned the artist to make a lithographic poster for the International Surrealist Exhibition hosted by the gallery in 1947, marking Miró’s first collaboration with Maeght. These works are some of the proofs for the New Year’s cards, with one being dedicated to Louis Clayeux, the French critic and dealer who was a friend of Miró and director of Galerie Maeght from 1948 – 1965.

Miró kept the etched plates after the cards were produced, and later reworked them, adding figural etchings to illustrate a deluxe edition of Anti-Platon by Yves Bonnefoy, which was published in 1962 by Galerie Maeght (Dupin 74; Cramer 77.)

David Hockney’s Celia in an Armchair (1980) is an elegant and lively portrait of Celia Birtwell, the artist’s longtime friend and muse. The
lithograph is a wonderful example of Hockney’s refined approach to line, form, and composition. Birtwell is depicted seated in a patterned armchair, her pose relaxed and her expression engaged.
