Tuesday 10 – Sunday 15 July

All art, like good literature and a long life, has a backstory. The Class of 2018, Putney School of Art and Design Diploma Exhibition, reflects the cultural diversity of its members. Black and white prints of a mythical Cuba depict landscape as a construct of memory; brightly coloured screen prints explore the marriage rites of the Middle East. The exploitative relationship between humans and animals is powerfully explored in mixed media. Mixed media and ceramics are used to interrogate the story of relationships between age, value and conservation and to explore how we endeavour to construct a narrative that gives meaning to our own lives.

Abstract Art by Stephen Cantrel

Tuesday 31 May
Sunday 12 June

As promised, Stephen has returned to the Chelsea Gallery with another exhibition of Paintings & Sculpture.

Stephen Cantrel’s art interest dates back to 1997 when he took to visiting the various wonderful galleries in London. But the journey truly started in 2000 when his initial experimentation matured to full blown individual style. During that time, Stephen travelled across Europe where he benefitted from the artistic influences of countries such as Italy and France.

At one point, Stephen became homeless for a while and that particular experience helped him to refine his style even more.

In the last few years, Stephen has been utilising computer software to create his take on Abstract Expressionism.

“TOWN, COUNTRY, AND ABROAD”
An exhibition of drawings and paintings by Martin Millard
Chelsea Gallery
Old Town Hall, Kings Road, London SW3 5EZ
Sunday 22 - Sunday 29, May 2016

Martin Millard was born and educated in England. He is a Chelsea resident and has drawn and painted in London for many years. He is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts, New York, where he studied illustration.
He started to draw and paint pubs and people’s houses on a commission basis many years ago. He continues to draw to commission, and he has, over the years, drawn many types of building, from factories to schools, and churches to football stadiums.

He has exhibited with many group shows over the years, and continues to take part every year at Art for Youth at the Mall Galleries. He was a founder member in the 1980s of the Nine Elms Group of Artists, which exhibited in many interesting venues, including the Long Room at the Oval, Lambeth Palace, and the Painters’ and Stainers’ Hall in the City. He has recently had a show in New York and at the Haslemere Museum.

This exhibition is a mixture of local pictures of the Chelsea area, London in general, and other subjects of interest in this country and abroad. It comprises well known subjects and more obscure but fascinating locations, in particular off the beaten trail in London.

TheatreArt premiered in London in 2014. This August Andrew Aué will bring his new exhibition to the Chelsea Gallery. TheatreArt celebrates West End theatre and is a unique experience, it combines paintings, statues, objects and music.

As a designer, the individual has been the centre point of his artwork during the last decades. The movement of acting, the space of lines, the experiencing of music and the seduction of expression. Where else, than in the world of Theatre?

Rupert Aker - Oil Landscapes of the Cotswolds exhibition

I am a Cotswold landscape painter, based in a studio at Painswick. I walk the local valleys and hills, gaining my inspiration from the woods, meadows and hedgerows, painting ‘en plein air’ when possible. My aim is to capture the effects of the light on the land though the medium of oil paint with palette knife.

I try to find a way of expressing the wonder of nature and the landscape around me through the medium of oil paint on canvas. Nothing can replace being outside and experiencing the natural world in its raw state, but if I can at least capture the essence of it, I am happy. I hope to create an emotional response through my painting – whether it be a sense of peace and calm or drama and energy: evening light and shadows; cow parsley and hogweed on a wayside verge; water and reflections; mist, evaporation and sunshine after a rain storm; the gloaming; a church spire providing a focal point in the landscape…

My current project is to hold a regular pop-up exhibition at locations throughout the Cotswolds and beyond, selling direct to the customer. I often sell paintings straight off the easel – I love the idea of people buying freshly produced paintings as they might buy freshly cut flowers.

Through My Eyes I See I See

This work is influenced by every day life. These can be attractive, unattractive and some are humorous components of contemporary culture. Through this exhibition we explore the notion of what is hidden that often becomes more revealing than what is seen. It is this paradox that holds our interest. The interplay between seen and unseen.

"My work isn't about form. It's about seeing. I'm excited about seeing things and I'm interested in the way I think other people see things." - Roy Lichtenstein
