Yesterday was Merchant Navy Day, 3rd September.

Megginch Castle in Scotland was proud to fly the Red Ensign over the ancestral home, birthplace and final resting place of Victoria Drummond.
Victoria Drummond was the first woman to qualify as a Marine Engineer. In World War Two, she was one of only two women to be awarded the Lloyd’s Medal for Bravery at Sea.

Today on BBC News at 1800 and 2200 there will be a supplement about the Merchant Navy in WW2 and it will include treatment of Merchant Seafarers as prisoners of war, a topic rarely mentioned.

Merchant mariners played a vital role in the Second World War, transporting desperately needed food, equipment, and personnel to Britain and other Allied countries on non-military vessels. Although not part of the armed forces, these men and women faced constant threat from enemy submarines, destroyers, and aircraft seeking to cut off supply lines. Thousands of merchant mariners were killed at sea; hundreds more were captured and sent to prisoner of war camps.

"The Battle of the Atlantic was not won by any navy or air force, it was won by the courage, fortitude and determination of the British and Allied merchant navy."

Rear Admiral Leonard Murray
Commander-in-Chief Canadian North Atlantic

Hi.Paul Price is wondering if anyone can help him. These have been at his dads as far back as he can remember. They look like coloured transparent and parts of them is sort of etched. They have had opal plastic put behind them. Has anyone got a clue what they are or used for.
What would a collaboration between the Honorary member of the HCMM Poet Laureate John Masefield and famous painter Kenneth D Shoesmith have looked like? Well, wonder no more as Glyn L Evans' new book Cargoes will be out on November 5. Glyn has carefully matched Shoesmith paintings with Masefield poems and the result is a beautifully-produced stunning coffee table book to dip into and enjoy for years to come. Priced at £30 + p&p, it's available to pre-order by emailing [email protected]
