Happy World Maritime Day 2023
Celebrating our seafaring community’s contribution to global trade is vital as over 80% of global trade is moved by sea. We are very proud of WELLINGTON’s history during WW II - she escorted 103 Atlantic convoys providing vital trade between the Americas and the UK during the war years. She also rescued over 400 seafaring and civilian shipwreck victims of U-boat attacks.
The theme for World Maritime Day 2023 is celebrating 50 years since MARPOL - The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships. The sea covers two-thirds of the world and protecting the sea we use is just as important as protecting our trade routes, and those that sail them.
To all mariners everywhere, we salute you.
London is also home to the International Maritime Organisation and this evening, their building will be bathed in blue light to celebrate World Maritime Day.
