Bankside Gallery

Bankside Gallery Bankside Gallery is on the south bank of the River Thames near Tate Modern, and is the Gallery of two historic art Societies: the Royal Watercolour Society, and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

Where we are: Its pretty difficult to find us at the moment with the building works at Blackfriars and at the Tate, but we’re still here and open seven days a week. Our entrance faces the Thames, so if you are coming along the Thames footpath diversion from the west, look out for the Bankside signs on Hopton Street and go through the archway. Turn right and you’ll spot the entrance. From the east head past Tate Modern and we’re down the steps on the left. For artists or buyers collecting works from the Gallery, limited parking is available in Hopton Street for loading and unloading only. Our societies: The Royal Watercolour Society represents the finest watercolour painting in Britain; it is the oldest watercolour society in the world, established in 1804, and is second only to the Royal Academy of Art in importance as an art society. http://www.royalwatercoloursociety.com/ http://banksidegallery.com/RWSHome.aspx The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) was founded as the Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers in 1880, in order to counter the Royal Academy’s then refusal to recognise printmaking as a creative, rather than reproductive, art. The Society has had many distinguished Members such as Walter Sickert, August Rodin, Dame Laura Knight, Graham Sutherland and Michael Rothenstein. http://banksidegallery.com/REHome.aspx

Juliet Wood: A Human Touch

Juliet moves from direct observation into colour-rich reinvention from drawings, always recognising each individual while painting the crowd, or a common humanity when painting the individual. She sees how life is for people by their stance, their myriad, colourful, noisy or silent interactions, bringing a human touch to whatever she encounters.

Continuing at Bankside Gallery until Sunday 14 July

There are many printmaking terms that you've probably heard but aren't quite sure exactly what they mean. This Thursday, Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers artist John Duffin will be joining us for an evening in the gallery to discuss how he makes his detailed etchings, and define what exactly goes into the making process of these prints.

'I am fascinated by patterns and shapes, and how they complement the people who wear them, while saying something about them. I have always been interested in fashion, and grew up surrounded by fashion magazines my mum would always buy. Some of the textile elements are a reference to interiors I visited or was surrounded by as a kid. Others mirror my interest in the work of textile designers like William Morris, Anni Albers, Maija Isola, as well as medieval botanical illustrations and herbaria.'
