Bankside Gallery

Bankside Gallery Bankside Gallery is on the south bank of the River Thames near Tate Modern, and is the Gallery of two historic art Societies: the Royal Watercolour Society, and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.
(60)

Where we are: Its pretty difficult to find us at the moment with the building works at Blackfriars and at the Tate, but we’re still here and open seven days a week. Our entrance faces the Thames, so if you are coming along the Thames footpath diversion from the west, look out for the Bankside signs on Hopton Street and go through the archway. Turn right and you’ll spot the entrance. From the east head past Tate Modern and we’re down the steps on the left. For artists or buyers collecting works from the Gallery, limited parking is available in Hopton Street for loading and unloading only. Our societies: The Royal Watercolour Society represents the finest watercolour painting in Britain; it is the oldest watercolour society in the world, established in 1804, and is second only to the Royal Academy of Art in importance as an art society. http://www.royalwatercoloursociety.com/ http://banksidegallery.com/RWSHome.aspx The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) was founded as the Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers in 1880, in order to counter the Royal Academy’s then refusal to recognise printmaking as a creative, rather than reproductive, art. The Society has had many distinguished Members such as Walter Sickert, August Rodin, Dame Laura Knight, Graham Sutherland and Michael Rothenstein. http://banksidegallery.com/REHome.aspx

"Someone told me early on that no-one would take me seriously as an artist while I spent too much time on the SWE [Society of Wood Engravers]... but in fact the opposite has been true." - Hilary Paynter

The Society of Wood Engravers’ Centenary Exhibition opens at Bankside Gallery in February. Leonie Bradley, Editor of Printmaking Today, went behind the scenes to find out how her mum, Hilary Paynter PPRE, has been instrumental in putting together a consistently high quality annual exhibition.

The Mini Picture Show closes this Sunday 😢 but don't be too disheartened! Bankside Gallery has lots of fantastic things coming up...

Between 29 January - 2 February you can catch 'Companions in Colour', a unique group exhibition of works by 14 artists and their teacher, Hugo Grenville, leading British Romantic painter.

With ongoing support and inspiration from Hugo, this diverse group of artists have delved into the exciting world of painting, and this show presents a shared narrative of their individual experiences. They have learnt to look anew, wrestled with perspective, proportion and design, studied the infinite gradations of tone and, above all, explored their emotional responses to colour.

Happy Winter Solstice! 🌒

Recognise this view? We certainly do! If you've ever visited Bankside Gallery you will know that we are based next to the Tate Modern and across the river from St Paul's Cathedral - so we're certainly familiar with this little snippet of London's skyline.

Whilst we're rather looking forward to the prospect of longer days and warm, sunny evenings, the shorter days do have their perks... this gorgeous moonlit view of the Thames is one in particular!

The Royal Watercolour Society isn't just about watercolours, y'know! 🎨

In fact, RWS artists work in a whole range of water-based media including acrylic, ink, gouache and more. Whilst all diluted with water, they have very different properties - as you can see from this beautiful acrylic work!

The Contemporary Watercolour Competition is an annual open-submission exhibition encouraging innovation and experimentation in any and all water-based media. The competition provides a prestigious platform for both established and emerging artists - and the deadline to enter is fast approaching!
