Artist Spotlight | James Shaw

James Shaw is an explorer of the material landscape with a hands on approach. His work aims to interrogate the material, systemic and formal approaches to the creation of objects. Frequently his work considers the resources around us challenging the notion of ‘waste’ to create new beautiful materials. Waste plastic has been a key theme of his work both through his ongoing Plastic Baroque project and notably in the exhibition Plastic Scene he co-curated with Laura Housely in 2018, which was named ‘the standout show of LDF’ by the

Artist Spotlight | José María Balmaceda

José María Balmaceda is a textile designer and entrepreneur from Mexico City. Always immersed in the world of design, he began his career working as a costume and set designer, to later work in interior design and the textile industry. The latter being his great passion, which he enjoyed practicing for six years and where he had the opportunity to work hand in hand with architects and interior designers from all over the country.

During a personal search for a professional change and being faithful to his passion for textiles, he undertook a trip to India and Nepal. It was in the course of this trip that he began to bond with his current Indian and Nepalese partners, who eventually became like family. This trip was a tremendous source of inspiration where everything that is known today as Balmaceda Studio, took shape.

José María started working on the pieces of his first collection: Fossil in 2019. From that first collection where he shows a very personal and intimate side to Monumento presented in February 2024 inspired by Mexican architecture, José María continues to express through his collections a personal project where he experiments with his vision of life and different sources of inspiration to conceptualize his ideas. His collections have been presented at the gallery and at in Mexico City. Since then Balmaceda Studio has presented 4 more collections at ZONA Maco and has participated in international fairs in Paris, France.

is currently represented and distributed by art galleries in the United States, and in England and in Australia.

Artist Spotlight | Minhee Kim

Minhee Kim’s artistic journey extends beyond exploration and discovery; it is an ongoing dialogue with the intricacies of human existence. With an academic background culminating in an MA in Textiles from the brings a profound understanding of the art and craft to her multidisciplinary practice.

In her paintings, Minhee captures elusive emotions and memories, depicting moments that defy verbal expression. Canvases become a canvas for life’s subtle narratives, each stroke resonating with the essence of shared human experiences.

Textiles, with their tactile language, serve as a unique platform for Minhee’s artistic expression. Delving into the fragility of existence and the resilience of the human spirit, she intricately weaves delicate threads and fallen hairs, translating unspoken narratives into tangible and evocative forms.

Minhee’s journey has expanded once more, during her artist-in-residence experience in Switzerland in 2023, where stone sculpture became an integral dimension of her exploration. Engaging in a profound dialogue with raw materials weathered by time, she uncovers forms embodying both strength and vulnerability. The chiselling process delves into the layers of time, shaping narratives that speak to the enduring nature of human stories.

Her work stands as a testament to the belief that art serves as a bridge between the seen and the unseen, the spoken and the unspoken. Whether on canvas, in textiles, or through sculpture, Minhee Kim’s creations aim to engage viewers on a visceral level, inviting them into a shared space of contemplation and connection.

Beyond her various experiences, including being a finalist in the 2019 prize & participation in biennale, exhibitions, her art reflects a continuous journey of expression and connection.

As part of the Language of Colour in Contemporary Design we are presenting Gravity Candelabra 6x by .fig

Dutch artists’ Ruben Hoogvliet and Gijs Wouters found each other in their fascination for materials, crafts and love for nature during their studies at the art academy ArtEZ in Arnhem. After graduation, they joined forces and experiences in Atelier Fig.

“FIG stands for ‘figure’ - a name that embodies a free and experimental vision of form, function and use. Inspired by the wonder of creation and human interaction, we embrace research, collaboration, and the endless possibilities where tech and craft meet.”

Through experimental processes and innovative designs they create a world of extraordinary objects. The aesthetic experience creates awareness of the tactility and transformation within the creative process and shows what often remains unexposed. With their work they provide a playful answer to the demand for new and personalised products within the current industry.

“The world revolves around efficiency, speed and preferably fitting into the mold of expectations. But it is the world out there that makes us wonder.”

The candelabra serves as a beautiful centrepiece for any table, designed to hold multiple candles in a graceful, upward-reaching structure. Echoing the inverted gravity concept, these holders use parabolic forms to support the weight of multiple candles. Like the other Gravity pieces the design process of the candelabra begins with an analog approach, involving hand-drawn sketches and paper models. Mathematical formulas are used to perfect the structure before the pattern is crafted from sponge material. This careful combination of artistry and precision ensures that each candelabra maintains its architectural integrity.

In a world defined by constant stimulation, The Language of Colour in Contemporary Design explores colour as a powerful yet often overlooked force in shaping how we feel, focus and rest.

Presented during and running until the 27th May, the exhibition brings together a curated selection of contemporary artists and designers whose practices engage with colour as both a visual and sensory language. Across ceramics, textiles, glass and sculptural objects, each work examines how colour interacts with material, form and light to influence perception and emotional response.

Rather than presenting objects in isolation, the exhibition considers the dialogue between them. It proposes the interior as a composed environment, where colour contributes to atmosphere, rhythm and a sense of balance.

Positioned within ’ evolving perspective on rest and wellbeing, the project reflects on how thoughtfully designed spaces can support clarity, calm and restoration.

Ian Turnock is an experienced sculptor based in the UK. His works suitable for interior and exteriors explore organic forms using industrial materials such as stainless steel, corten, aluminium and copper to create unique, intricate pieces. creates intricate and detailed drawings from which the final artwork is digitally cut. His work is represented by

‘My sculpture is inspired by complex patterns and structures created by the natural world. Currently my main sources of inspiration are the silhouettes trees form against the sky at different times of the year. Often it is the empty spaces and gaps I am looking for just as much as the leaves and branches themselves, an aesthetic concept known in Japanese culture as ‘Ma’ which is akin to the silences between the notes in
music. The Japanese also have a poetic word for the dappled light trees create: ‘Komorebi’.

My background in graphic design influences my exploration of form and line. Drawings and photographs are the starting point from which I develop organic, abstract and figurative sculpture. I create intricate drawings from which the final artwork is digitally cut into stainless steel, corten weathering steel, aluminium, copper and plywood, transforming the drawn line into a tangible object.’

Turnock has been commissioned by , ’s Queen Mary II and for Brackenbury Square.

A continuation of the cross thatched technique first developed for the Latitude bench in 2019, Longitude introduces the use of square stocks salvaged from the floorboards of a renovated East Sussex hospital in Hastings. 240 linear metres of rich toned Rhodesian mahogany have been painstakingly refurbished. Composed with a sculptural array of subtle interlocking joints, Longitude’s dynamic form is structurally lightweight whilst surprisingly rigid.

Bethan Laura Wood has run a multidisciplinary studio since 2009 characterised by materials investigation, artisan collaboration and a passion for colour and detail. Residencies and location-based projects have become an important factor in her design process, often working in response to her location, in collaboration with local manufacturers, or reflecting
back into her work the visual and material culture particular to that area. Bethan is fascinated by the connections we make with the everyday objects that surround us and, as a collector herself, likes to explore what drives people to hold onto one particular object while discarding another. Bethan explores these relationships and questions how they might become cultural conduits. She is interested in critical approaches to achieving sustainability within mass consumption and the production-driven context of the design industry.
