The Adivasi of India are a living example of #coexistence with nature and you can see their elephants brought to London by @coexistence.story in the Royal Parks and Berkeley Square for some weeks yet.

Garbe was associated with the Expressionist movement and he was in the circles of other famous German artists of the time such as Käthe Kollwitz, Ernst Barlach and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. This work displays his creativity, the thick planes are at juxtaposing angles, fitting together to form the bold shape of the elephant. Unlike the Adivasi, it is unlikely he would have passed elephants on his regular walk to his studio but he has still joyously captured the spirit of the animal.

Of course as we share our Elephants this week as the Herd shares our city, we had to include a piece from Rembrandt Bugatti.

Rembrandt would return several times to the elephant form and the delicacy of handling and command of poise in the piece here shows his complete understanding of the animal. As ever, Bugatti captures the beast, both at the physical, anatomical level and also in terms of the spirit and character of this most remarkable of animals.

If you are about in London today, although our galleries are closed you can still visit the Elephant Herd in the @royalparks and in @berkeleysquare. If you’re wondering how they came to be here, the herd have been made with great love and skill by @therealeleco who live in elephant habitat in the beautiful Nilgiri Hills, southern India. They had to take shelter during the pandemic at @sudeleycastle and @petershamnurseries who kindly stepped in to care for the herd whilst they waited to resume their migration.

Our elephants today are by Mahonri Young, who created his first clay sculptures at the age of five when recovering from appendicitis. Let's hope the elephants across our city encourage our littlest visitors to explore creating their own elephants at home. Here are also Sladmore's youngest creations over this very rainy weekend.

Today marks the start of our celebration of Elephants in the galleries, in celebration of our partnership with CoExistence who are striving to ensure we can share our planet with these magnificent beasts. You can see the herd of 100+ elephants in the Royal Parks, up through Berkeley Square and you can even find one in our Mayfair Gallery.

We had to start of course with one of the most famous pieces by the 'Father of Animal Sculpture' Antoine-Louis Barye and his 'Elephant of Senegal', which caused such a sensation when it was first released in Paris and is still today the cornerstone of any sculpture collection. If you aren't able to travel at the moment you can see casts of this piece in the following museums. The Louvre, Paris,The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, USA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The City Art Museum, St. Louis, USA, The Corcoran Gallery, Washington, The Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore.

Auguste Rodin was born on this day in 1840.⠀
⠀
In 1880 Rodin won a commission to create a portal for a planned museum of Decorative Arts, which led to the creation of two works without which a collection cannot be considered complete - the Thinker and The Kiss. The commission which inspired them was of course 'The Gates of Hell' which for the next forty years created a legacy of sculpture which captured every human emotion in metal.⠀

'There is something at work in my soul which I do not understand' said Frankenstien (Mary Shelley) - our selection of birds for this day would not understand why their humans have cast them as 'spooky'. Although Clesinger's Owl and Skull is a stark reminder that 'death comes to us all', Fremiet's Marabou could be considered arcane but was in fact a commission for the Egyptian room at the Louve and Vordermayer's Raven was in fact a portrait of his pet Huckebein.⠀

Bourdelle's bronze entitled Maternity (1893) which we loaned to the 'En Passant: Impressionist Sculpture' exhibition in Frankfurt has returned to the gallery today and whilst we are sad such an amazing exhibition has ended, it has felt like Christmas in the gallery, unwrapping this and other sculptures. Bourdelle's birthday is today and so it only seems right to share a selection of his works and of course a photo of the man himself.

Bourdelle, from humble beginnings became Rodin's greatest apprentice, a collaboration which was to last 15 years. In 1895, he received his first official commission, a milestone in any artist's life, for 'Monument aux Morts' in Montauban. This led to his first solo exhibition at the Hebrard Gallery in 1905 and culminated today with the Bourdelle Museum and monuments around the world.

Sladmore's Birth of an Artist series shares works by our Masters of Sculpture which illuminate a crucial moment in their careers.

Ducks have always been a fascination for sculptors and not just because they remain in demand by their collectors. Creating a sculpture which displays bulk whilst highlighting a delicate surface is a great challenge in three dimensional art. Enclosed is a selection of sculptures featuring ducks, from 1864 to contemporary on view in our current exhibition.⠀

Rembrandt Bugatti was born in 1884 in Milan. His childhood was filled with the countryside surrounding his home and the artists who visited his family. A regular visitor was Giovanni Segantini the impressionist alpine painter who the quiet serious Bugatti often accompanied.⠀His influence can be seen clearly in a room in Frankfurt's Staedel Museum 'En Passant: Impressionist Sculpture' where a unique sculpture 'Family of Goats' has been placed next to Segantini's 'Goat with Her Kid, 1890'. Impressionism is one of the descriptive words applied to Bugatti's oeuvre, although often his works are beyond any movement or style but in this work, the movement of the flowers and corn around the goats, created by fleeting glimpses of detail and the very absence of detail in the static metal is a masterwork.⠀
⠀
Sladmore's Birth of an Artist series shares works by our Masters of Sculpture which have a story illuminating the human behind the art.⠀

Fine Sculpture since 1965

Our gallery was started in 1965 at the family farm in Gloucestershire, from a private collection of animalier sculpture created by our Director’s mother Jane Horswell. Today we still hold this to be true - pieces must be works we would be proud to possess, of a quality that deserves to be on display.
