💥 JUST ANNOUNCED 💥

We are taking part in the inaugural edition of London Gallery Weekend, with a dedicated exhibition across both of our gallery spaces in Mayfair and St. James's. ‘Beyond Bronze’ explores the work of our artists who sculpt in media and experimental materials outside of the tradition of bronze. Our show will include sculpture in wood, ceramics and mixed media. Featured here is Jeanne Piffard's 'Reclining Lion Cub' in terracotta, one of the artists who form part of the Les Animaliers movement in Paris in the twentieth century.

London Gallery Weekend is a collaboration between galleries across London, held over the weekend of 4-6 June 2021. Follow @londongalleryweekend to find out more.

Auguste Rodin was born on this day in 1840.⠀
⠀
In 1880 Rodin won a commission to create a portal for a planned museum of Decorative Arts, which led to the creation of two works without which a collection cannot be considered complete - the Thinker and The Kiss. The commission which inspired them was of course 'The Gates of Hell' which for the next forty years created a legacy of sculpture which captured every human emotion in metal.⠀

'There is something at work in my soul which I do not understand' said Frankenstien (Mary Shelley) - our selection of birds for this day would not understand why their humans have cast them as 'spooky'. Although Clesinger's Owl and Skull is a stark reminder that 'death comes to us all', Fremiet's Marabou could be considered arcane but was in fact a commission for the Egyptian room at the Louve and Vordermayer's Raven was in fact a portrait of his pet Huckebein.⠀

'Birds in Sculpture' continues for two more weeks with sculpture from the nineteenth century to today.⠀

Bourdelle's bronze entitled Maternity (1893) which we loaned to the 'En Passant: Impressionist Sculpture' exhibition in Frankfurt has returned to the gallery today and whilst we are sad such an amazing exhibition has ended, it has felt like Christmas in the gallery, unwrapping this and other sculptures. Bourdelle's birthday is today and so it only seems right to share a selection of his works and of course a photo of the man himself.

Bourdelle, from humble beginnings became Rodin's greatest apprentice, a collaboration which was to last 15 years. In 1895, he received his first official commission, a milestone in any artist's life, for 'Monument aux Morts' in Montauban. This led to his first solo exhibition at the Hebrard Gallery in 1905 and culminated today with the Bourdelle Museum and monuments around the world.

Sladmore's Birth of an Artist series shares works by our Masters of Sculpture which illuminate a crucial moment in their careers.

Ducks have always been a fascination for sculptors and not just because they remain in demand by their collectors. Creating a sculpture which displays bulk whilst highlighting a delicate surface is a great challenge in three dimensional art. Enclosed is a selection of sculptures featuring ducks, from 1864 to contemporary on view in our current exhibition.⠀

Rembrandt Bugatti was born in 1884 in Milan. His childhood was filled with the countryside surrounding his home and the artists who visited his family. A regular visitor was Giovanni Segantini the impressionist alpine painter who the quiet serious Bugatti often accompanied.⠀His influence can be seen clearly in a room in Frankfurt's Staedel Museum 'En Passant: Impressionist Sculpture' where a unique sculpture 'Family of Goats' has been placed next to Segantini's 'Goat with Her Kid, 1890'. Impressionism is one of the descriptive words applied to Bugatti's oeuvre, although often his works are beyond any movement or style but in this work, the movement of the flowers and corn around the goats, created by fleeting glimpses of detail and the very absence of detail in the static metal is a masterwork.⠀
⠀
Sladmore's Birth of an Artist series shares works by our Masters of Sculpture which have a story illuminating the human behind the art.⠀

Sladmore is celebrating all creatures with wing in our 'Birds in Sculpture' exhibition which ends November 6th. In particular it has been wonderful to host a small collection of Pelicans in our St. James's space. The living pelicans of St. James's, who are free to roam but chose to stay, were first introduced to the park in 1664 as a gift from the Russian Ambassador - over forty pelicans have since made the park home. ⠀
⠀
We do allow visitors to touch the sculpture in the gallery, as the joy of three dimensional art is that it engages every sense but please don't touch the real ones in the park. They don't like it.⠀

Our ‘Birds in Sculpture - Antique to Contemporary’ is now ready to view in person in our Jermyn Street Gallery or on our website. During the last six months as we have become more still in our dwellings, we have all had more time to observe the fleeting visits by our ‘feathered friends’, as they in turn have become bolder without the interference of modern life. A renewed admiration has been born for bird’s delicate beauty which covers an endless durability as the back drop to our civilisation. There is no doubt there is also envy at their freedom to cross not only our garden fences but to migrate to countries which are currently denied to us. #birdsculpture #charlesartus #antoinelouisbarye #andrebecquerel #rembrandtbugatti #bugatti #jeanclesinger #georgescollatd #albericcollin #geoffreydashwood #charlesdelhommeau #raphaeldiligent #josuedupon #emmanuelfremiet #alfredjacquemart #wilhelmkrieger #marcellemar #pierrejulesmene #julesmoigniez #ferdinandpautrot #francoispompon #edouardsandoz #siriotofanari #contemporarysculpture #twentiethcenturysculpture #nineteenthcenturysculpture #bronzesculpture

Charles Cary Rumsey was born on this day in 1879 in Buffalo New York. After his return from Paris in 1906, he was commissioned by the architects Carrère and Hastings to produce bespoke works for high society homes. This would lead to the 1916 frieze of the Buffalo Hunt which can be still viewed today on Manhattan Bridge in New York.

The course of his career was changed by the commissions from Carrère and Hastings, as was his personal life as he met his beloved wife Mary when he produced work for her father's house. They married in 1910 to the consternation of society - he was the artistic eight goal polo player and she was the founder of the Junior League which was to spread across America and beyond.

Joseph Pallenberg, born today in 1882, like many Animaliers considered his education best served not in a class room but directly in front of the animal form. It was in the Berlin zoo, he met the founder of the Hamburg Zoo who commissioned him to add life-size animals to the gates in 1907. This was a pivotal moment in his career, enabling him to travel abroad for commissions, for example he created animals to adorn the exterior of the giraffe house in Detroit Zoo. Like Bugatti, his sculptures are portraits of specific animals rather than a generic type. His love of animals could be seen - if you were brave enough - when visiting his studio which was filled with live animals including a tame lion and wolf!⠀
⠀
He has a chapter in the book 'Les Animaliers 1900-1950' and a selection of his work can be viewed in our Jermyn Street gallery.⠀

This work was created when Rembrandt Bugatti returned to the subject of small deer-family animals (these are Kudu from Africa). The later deer pieces frequently suggest that one animal may be ailing or unhappy, ‘tended’ by another. The bond between the animals (one which Bugatti is known to have often found lacking among human companions) is superbly expressed in this sculpture. ⠀
⠀
This piece was loaned to the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard California for the exhibition 'The Art of Bugatti - A Comprehensive Retrospective of The Bugatti Family of Artists'.⠀

Joseph Bernard's 'Mother and Child' was loaned to an exhibition in a museum space created by McArthurGlen in Provence entitled 'Rodin et Ses Contemporaries'. Femme à l'enfant is one of his most famous sculptures, conceived at the height of his career in 1914, its simple and monumental grace shows how the artist had succeeded in breaking away from the realistic style of his contemporaries and from the influence of his teacher Auguste Rodin. Nearly all of this edition are in permanent public and private museums.⠀

Fine Sculpture since 1965

Our gallery was started in 1965 at the family farm in Gloucestershire, from a private collection of animalier sculpture created by our Director’s mother Jane Horswell. Today we still hold this to be true - pieces must be works we would be proud to possess, of a quality that deserves to be on display.
