Royal Society of Printmakers

Royal Society of Printmakers The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers is the UK's premier printmaking organisation. Established in 1880.

Its home is Bankside Gallery, on the Thames Riverside, next door to Tate Modern. The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) was founded as the Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers in 1880. It was established to counter the Royal Academy’s then refusal to recognise printmaking as a creative rather than a merely reproductive art. All Members are elected on merit in a tradition reaching back o

ver a hundred years. New Members are elected by the Council of the Society based on the quality of their work alone. Eminent past members include Graham Sutherland, Stanley William Hayter, Edward Bawden, Julian Trevelyan and Michael Rothenstein.
