🗓️ In 2024 we announced what we didn’t realise at the time would sadly be our last open call at San Mei. One of the artists selected from that cohort was and we’re excited that a version of Dinu’s proposed project will be shown next week as part of the Festival of ENCOUNTERS, opening in time for Open House () this weekend.

🎶 The exhibition will be open for a week alongside events in the Festival of ENCOUNTERS that draw on many of the themes in Dinu’s exhibition Back-a-Yard Swag: reggae/dub, Chinese Jamaican recording studios and house parties in Britain, the impact of the Windrush Generation on UK culture, dancefloors and DIY party culture. More info on Back-a-Yard Swag below, do join us for the show.

Back-a-Yard Swag

13–14 September 11am–5pm
15–19 September 12–5pm
Van Gogh House, 87 Hackford Road, London SW9 0RE.
Free entry

Van Gogh House presents ‘Back-a-Yard Swag’, a solo exhibition of sculpture, assemblage and music by artist Dinu Li. The exhibition materialises an overlooked but important British history of blues parties in the homes of Caribbean communities, kept alive until the late 1980s.
The works centre on the memory of one specific all-nighter Li attended, where the playlist included tracks produced by descendants of Chinese indentured labourers in Jamaica. Bass, echoes and reverb vibrate across the rooms of Van Gogh House, interspersed with the sounds of Chinese tribal mountain songs, a sampling of mid 1960’s rocksteady beats and a dub playlist.

The objects and materials brought together by Li, form a structure of new familiarity, acting as cultural agents for polyphonic multiplicity.

With thanks to Fenton Arts Trust, Lambeth Council and the Wang Family for their support..

Van Gogh House London

⭐️ Expressions of Interest ⭐️

Across April 2025, for the first time Van Gogh House is opening an opportunity for artists to propose potential residency and public programme projects, in the form of an Expression of Interest. This is not an Open Call, and projects are not destined for a specific time-frame, although we are in planning phase for our 2026 programme.

Overall, we would like to widen our community, develop longer-term relationships with artists and provide those outside our network the opportunity to propose ideas and share their practice with us.

We also want to share the history of the house and our programme aims with artists, so that when we do get proposals, they are in line with what we are looking to commission.

For full information on how to submit a proposal and for an in depth information pack please see on Van Gogh House website!

Last 2 days!
Our final exhibition at San Mei Gallery closes this Saturday!

As we prepare to say goodbye to Anna-Rose’s window exhibition we want to take a moment to celebrate the archive of talented artists that have shown in our Window Gallery since we established it. From sculptural works by Alia Hamaoui (2nd Slide), to textured mosaics by Alexi Marshall (6th Slide), the tiny but mighty space has seen many shapes, materials and ideas pass through its walls.

We want to thank all the Window Gallery artists who turned our street-facing space into such a vibrant and dynamic display, it has been a joy to see it transformed.

Josie Perry & Daphne Simons: ‘Tamara and the Swan’ ( )
Alia Hamaoui: ‘HINO 500’ ( )
Malcolm Bradley: ‘A camera the garden can’t see’ (.bradley )
Egle Jauncems: ‘Pattern Untitled’ )
Phineas Harper: ‘Cascades’ (
Alexi Marshall: ‘A Return to Innocence’ (
Anna-Rose Stefatou: ‘Dregs, Beacons’ ()

Last Week!

Anna-Rose Stefatou’s exhibition is sadly coming down after the 15th so don’t miss it!

It has been such a pleasure to work with Stefatou for our final exhibition at San Mei Gallery. During her opening we drank tea, listened to some incredible and varied spoken word performances and had a chance to remember all the special moments that brought people together under the San Mei roof.

Why not pop over to see Anna-Rose’s work with friends and get a coffee at our neighbours . We are only a short walk away from Brixton or Stockwell stations!

The works are still available to purchase too so have a browse online at sanmeigallery.co.uk

Gathering and repositioning knowledge guides her creative process: research includes archival footage, taking interviews, collecting objects, and location visits. This process is made visible through her material approach to the photographic image, transformed through different materials, forms and uses, as it unfolds and re-invents itself within new contexts.

“Rapture, still. Snatching quick glimpses of the sickly suspension, when perhaps we are feeling particularly attuned. As if the moment of deciphering were the moment of disillusion. Finger in the edges, tracing ancient stars. True surprise comes from the look-around, the seeing-at; the all-pervasive marriage. The sullen silliness exclaims again and again—there must be something more to this, some seam, some aim. Looking up from the strange attractor that seemed, for a moment, to tie it all together—the sprawling, impossible geometry was always there, clear as crowning sunlight.”
