These costumes were made by Joyce Guy who moved to Ilford from Trinidad in 1958. Joyce made food and costumes for the Ebony steel band who performed at Notting Hill Carnival in the 1970s. Here they are on display in our 2004 exhibition ‘Carnival!’ 🥁

On this day in 1945, known as Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, the Second World War came to an end.

While local people celebrated the end of the war that night, like in this photo taken on the streets of Ilford, there was also concern over the atomic bomb the dropping of the atomic bomb as seen in this article from the Ilford Guardian the following day.
