At Middlesex we have the facilities and the expertise to enhance your exploration of all kinds of art, from the more traditional forms like painting and sculpture to more contemporary approaches including digital arts and installation. We place an emphasis on learning about art history, theory and practice through studio-based teaching and you will benefit from having an individual tutor as well a

s being part of a small, friendly peer group. As a student, you will have the freedom to work independently within the tutorial framework so that you can develop self-discipline and the confidence to comment critically. This approach often leads to student-led collaborations, which contribute to the collective ethos of the course. Initiatives have included a range of exhibitions and events, and many collaborative groups have continued professionally beyond Middlesex.

📷 1. Oval on a misty day

📷 2-4. Uni Ishihara /

For her first solo exhibition in Europe, Umi Ishihara invites us to enter a world of nocturnal animals, where women come to life after dark, eyes glowing, long claws, climbing high. In the first gallery, the film Nocturnal Melody follows the experiences of Eri and Catalina, two dancers based in Tokyo whose lives are fuelled by music, nightlife and desire. They share their stories; of their childhood, growing up, dreams and politics as we join them in dressing rooms, dancing on stage and in the club all under a cloak of darkness. In this world, orthodox rules and societal codes become slippery. Performing, working, flirting and socialising merge into a continuous lived practice...

New Contemporaries, the leading organisation supporting early career and emerging artists in the UK, presents its annual group exhibition showcasing 26 artists selected through an open call by Pio Abad, Louise Giovanelli and Grace Ndiritu.

The artists engage with dystopian futures; critical responses to the climate crisis, gentrification, experiences of displacement and systems of power. They explore our relationships and connections with each other, our ancestors, and digital technologies across time and geographical borders.

During the Media Sites and Situations module, our second years created new work between analogue and digital realms. With the help of our dedicated technicians, they were introduced to a host of digital technologies for the creation of artworks. These included sound, AI image and video generation, digital scanning and modelling in ZBrush, Virtual Reality via MetaQuest Headset 4 and Unreal Engine..!
In groups the students created virtual exhibition spaces suitable to their concept and artworks, which were presented to the whole year group in the final week of term 1.

We were super impressed with the professional standard of these exciting individual and group outcomes - from virtual reality to a website archive with individual artist showcases that have the potential to live on far beyond this module's final event.
Congratulations on this successful project, Year 2!

All three group projects can be seen here:
