Multilingual Digital Storytelling - Goldsmiths

Multilingual Digital Storytelling - Goldsmiths Global intercultural digital literacy project by Goldsmiths University of London, supported by the BFI, British Museum, Museum of London, and NRCSE.

Critical Connections II: Moving Forward with Multilingual Digital Storytelling is a global project to boost 21st century literacy in schools using digital storytelling. The two-year project (September 2015 August 2017) involves researchers working with students, teachers and parents in community-based complementary and mainstream schools in the UK, Algeria, Luxembourg, Palestine, Taiwan and the United States as part of the multilingual programme. The project has the support of the renowned British Film Institute(BFI), British Museum, Museum of London and National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education (NRCSE). It will see film making used as a means to encourage students to engage with language learning and embrace intercultural literacy as well as digital literacy. www.goldsmithsmdst.wordpress.com

Linguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages disappear. One language disappears on average every two weeks, taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage.
21 February is International Mother Language Day, celebrate with us and tell us what does your mother language mean to you?

"Stories have inspired humanity for generations. Few other funds of human experience have unfolded similar powers in connecting people across time, space, generations & cultures. The renewed interest in storytelling points to its educational potential and the continued impact on people’s lives and learning."

ISL Surrey (Matthias Dvorsak H.,László Goczan, Bálint Goczan, Ivan Falco Meira, Juan Henry Rodrigues)

After a decade of war and conflicts, the world has finally achieved total peace. However, the past should never be forgotten. An old robot from the far past, finally wakes up after a 100 years nap. This may just change everything he knows. Does he still belong to this world? This is a trilingual movie, with dialogues in English, Hungarian and Portuguese.

Today we bring you some behind the scenes from the initial tests for ISL Surrey's multilingual digital story about robots and A.I!

Last week students from International School Of London, ISL Surrey started exploring outside space and new outdoor objects. They started to set the scene, devise props and play with daylight/artificial light. As you can see in the photo one particular object captured their attention (a building block for a skyscraper). Students also experimented with digital storyboarding, using an iPad for description of scenes (video) which proved to be a useful and practical method for this set. Overall, it was a fun refreshing session that generated new creativity and resourcefulness!

Stay tuned for more previews!

Art on the move...Rickshaws and their stories!

Students learning Bengali at the Central Foundation Girls' School have been investigating the historical and socio-political context of rickshaws. They have footage of rickshaw artists and drivers in Dhaka and last week they went out into their local community with the Goldsmiths team and Salmagundi Films to interview Jon Maillard from the Albion Kids Show. At the centre they have a rickshaw from Dhaka and the students took photographs that document the history of rickshaw art and work.

This work is part of their Bengali-English digital story and it will be part of the museum resource pack which is linked with the British Museum and Museum of London. We can't wait to see what they create!

Our team is out in Taiwan this month and we're thrilled that our Multilingual Digital Storytelling workshops were fully booked within seconds!

We've had inspiring meetings with local university professors and head teachers who are very interested in our project and potential future projects. One of the schools is in the mountains and they are seeking different ways of making their school a base camp to connect community and families.

Dr Yu-Chiao Chung and Mark Long (Goldsmiths, University of London) and Jo van de Meer (BFI) will be keeping us in the loop and we'll be sharing our updates here soon!

Multilingual Digital Storytelling through Robots and Artificial Intelligence! _________________________________________

As part of the ongoing work for the multilingual digital storytelling project, our leading team from Goldsmiths, University of London and Salmagundi Films visited the International School Of London, ISL Surrey to observe film making in action and interview staff and students. Students were keen to present their ongoing work focusing on robots and artificial intelligence. Collaborating with the Languages and Art & Design departments, they are developing the different characters of the robots and exploring language, storylines and digital technology. The stage had been built and the robots created. We look forward to seeing their film at the BFI on 23 June 2017!
