Florence had a loving relationship with her family, including her cousins from the Nicholson, Smith, and Bonham-Carter families. This 19th century album contains drawings and paintings of Nicholson and Nightingale family members.

This album is on display in the museum as part of our 200 Exhibit. It is on loan from the Leeds Art Fund. Donated by the Wingfield family to the Leeds Art Fund, 2018 it is part of the collections at Lotherton Hall, the home of Nightingale’s goddaughter, Gwendolen Gascoigne.

We hope you've been enjoying your family time during the festive period and if you are looking for something to do with family today we suggest visiting us at the museum!

"A Christmas Dinner on the heights before Sebastopol" published in 1855.

In Christmas 1855 food parcels were pouring in, with families back home sending Christmas cakes to those fighting in the Crimean War. Officers with money could buy food hampers from Oppenheim's and Fortnum's who had set up shop. Huts were decorated with artificial flowers and decorations made of tissue paper, bows, bright Calico and spruce and fir branches. In the camps there were parties and theatricals. And for Christmas dinner they ate a bird indigenous to the region - the bustard.

"Our soldiers in the Crimea will have their Christmas; and that it may be a happy and merry one, must be the hearty wish of every Englishman" - The Guardian, 24 December, 1855.

Stained glass roundel hung in a tree in the grounds of St Thomas Hospital on a cold December day in 2022.

The roundel, which is available to buy in our shop, takes the image of Florence Nightingale from the painted and leaded glass lancet window panel. The panel was discovered in a store in Guy's Hospital in 2017. The glass panel may have come from Riddel House- a nurse’s home established for St. Thomas’ Hospital and the Nightingale Training School. This glass portrait of Florence may have been the only surviving treasure from the home. The panel dates from the early 20th century and is on display in the museum.

It makes a beautiful decoration and a gift for all year round. Get yours here: https://www.florence-nightingale.co.uk/product/stained-glass-roundel/

In our collection we have this series of modern nursing uniforms. Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust introduced this range of new uniforms, designed by Paul Costelloe, in December 2005. It is interesting to see the different styles for different roles, from charge nurses, to healthcare support workers and nurse specialists. We would love to know if any of our followers have worn these?

Known as a rose diagram but commonly called ‘coxcomb’, this graph was designed by Nightingale with the help of William Farr. It highlights the number of unnecessary deaths during the Crimean War as a result of preventable infections. It has become Nightingale’s most well-known statistical illustration.

Professional data storyteller RJ Andrews will be joining us tomorrow at the museum to discuss his new book 'Florence Nightingale, Mortality and Health Diagrams.' Florence Nightingale deployed statistics to advocate for change and this volume tells you the story of how she did it.

Wednesday 30th November at 15:30 (GMT)

The event is free in the museum (with paid admission) and available to watch online: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/florence-nightingale-mortality-and-health-diagrams-tickets-475596932227

Lily Parr (26 April 1905 – 24 May 1978) was an English professional women's association football player. She continued playing even when in 1921 the Football Association banned women from playing on their members grounds. In 2002, she was the first woman to be inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame. Parr also became an LGBTQ icon.

Lily Parr, having worked lots of different jobs throughout her life, trained as a nurse. She worked in Whittingham Mental Hospital until she retired. While working at the hospital she continued to play women's football for the Preston Ladies until 1951.

The of our museum collection goes back to 1913 when Dame Alicia Lloyd-Still began acquiring artefacts during her time as matron of St Thomas’ Hospital. This early collection was held by the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas’ and was known as ‘Nightingalia’.

The collection was first publicly displayed for the centenary of the Crimean War in 1954 at the Royal College of Surgeons in London, then again on the centenary of the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in 1960, and the 150th anniversary of Florence’s birth in 1970. The collection was transferred into the care of the newly created Florence Nightingale Museum Trust in 1983, who then went on to open the museum on the site of the original Nightingale Training School in 1989. And we are still here and open today!

Thank you to for the prompt to share this story.

In Florence's only audible words, recorded in 1890, she remembered her time during the Crimean War some 34 years previously. Nightingale said: "When I am no longer even a memory, just a name, I hope my voice may perpetuate the great work of my life. God bless my dear old comrades of Balaclava and bring them safe to shore. Florence Nightingale."

There were approximately 18,000 wounded and 22,000 British soldier deaths during the Crimean War; 17,500 by disease.

Image shows The Guards Crimean War Memorial in St James's, London, which commemorates the Crimean War of 1853–56.

At the Florence Nightingale Museum, we remember all those lost and affected by conflicts across the world and through time. We also champion peace and support the Nurses for Peace initiative.

On this day in 1854, Florence and her nurses arrived in Scutari. These photos are of the ‘Register of Nurses Sent to Military Hospitals’ which is on display in the museum.

The 4th November is also Day 4 of this year with today’s theme being this fits perfectly! This register records the names and details of 229 women who served as nurses at the British military hospitals during the Crimean War. It begins with Nightingale’s name.
