Sculptures from Antiquity to the Present Days

Sculptures from Antiquity to the Present Days “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover.”
MCHELANGELO
“Sculpture is an art of the open air.

Daylight, sunlight, is necessary to it, and for me, its best setting and complement is nature.”
HENRY MOORE

DAVID is a life-size marble sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The subject of the work is the biblical David, about to throw the stone that will bring down Goliath, which will allow David to behead him. Compared to earlier works on the same theme (notably the David of Michelangelo), the sculpture broke new ground in its implied movement and its psychological intensity.

Nationality: Italian 🇮🇹
Known as: Sculptor, painter and architect
Important artworks (sculpture): David, Apollo and Daphne, The R**e of Proserpina, Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, Sleeping Hermaphroditus

The Galleria Borghese or Borghese Gallery is an art gallery in Rome, Italy, housed in the former Villa Borghese Pinciana. At the outset, the gallery building was integrated with its gardens, but nowadays the Villa Borghese gardens are considered a separate tourist attraction. The Galleria Borghese houses a substantial part of the Borghese Collection of paintings, sculpture and antiquities, begun by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V (reign 1605–1621). The building was constructed by the architect Flaminio Ponzio, developing sketches by Scipione Borghese himself, who used it as a villa suburbana, a country villa at the edge of Rome.

The statue was transported to Newfoundland in 1856, as recorded on December 4 in the diary of Bishop John Thomas Mullock: "Received safely from Rome, a beautiful statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in marble, by Strazza. The face is veiled, and the figure and features are all seen. It is a perfect gem of art". It was then kept at the Bishop's Palace next to the Catholic Cathedral in St. John's until 1862, when Bishop Mullock presented it to Mother Mary Magdalene O'Shaughnessy, the Superior of the Presentation Convent. The bust has since remained under the care of Presentation Sisters, in Cathedral Square, St. John's.

Artist: Giovanni Strazza (Italian 🇫🇷)
Year: Before 1856
Type: Carrara marble
Dimensions: 19 in
