“Charcoal allows the artist to think in light and shadow before colour ever enters the painting.”

Jeremy Scott’s latest charcoal portrait study explores the power of tonal observation, structure, and atmosphere through the classical tradition of academic drawing. Using carefully controlled values and subtle transitions, the portrait is gradually built through layers of charcoal, capturing both likeness and form with remarkable sensitivity.

Charcoal drawing has a long history dating back to the Renaissance, where masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and later artists of the French Academic tradition used charcoal and chalk as essential tools for studying anatomy, light, and composition. Before the development of modern painting methods, charcoal was one of the primary mediums used to train artists in observation and draftsmanship.

Its deep blacks, soft transitions, and ability to create both precise detail and expressive atmosphere made charcoal a fundamental part of atelier training for centuries. Even today, many classical art academies continue to use charcoal drawing as one of the most important foundations for learning realism and portraiture.

At Sunny Art Centre, our students study traditional drawing methods through observation, tonal analysis, anatomy, and classical techniques inspired by the Old Masters.

A new life drawing cycle has begun in the studio.

Working from a male model in a sustained pose, this term is designed to allow time to slow down, observe more carefully, and build a drawing with greater structure and intention.

Rather than quick studies, the focus shifts towards developing a more complete and resolved work over multiple sessions. This is where proportion, anatomy, and light begin to connect in a more meaningful way.

With guidance from Martin Drexler, students are supported individually at every stage, whether refining fundamentals or pushing towards more advanced understanding.

Open to all levels.

Tuesdays, 18:30 – 20:30

Working from a new model in a sustained pose allows time to slow down, observe more carefully, and develop drawings with greater depth and intention. It is here that structure, light, and form begin to truly make sense.

At Sunny Art Centre, studying from the Old Masters is at the core of how we teach painting.

In this study, our student Sophie Laurence works from a painting by Rachel Ruysch, one of the most important flower painters of the Dutch Golden Age.

Ruysch’s work goes beyond decoration. Her paintings reflect a deep understanding of botany and scientific observation, combined with highly refined composition. Notice how the flowers twist, overlap, and extend into space, creating a sense of movement and natural growth.

Technically, these paintings are built with precision. A dark background is established first, and forms are gradually developed through layers. Transparent glazes create depth and softness, while controlled opacity brings forward light and structure.

In this study, the focus is not on copying details, but on understanding structure, value, and the direction of light, learning how a painting is constructed from the ground up.

This is how students begin to develop both technical control and a deeper visual understanding of painting.

Mr Panda (2024) by Yinjie Sun

A quiet meditation on identity, belief, and balance.
This work brings together Eastern spiritual symbolism and Western religious imagery, reflecting a personal journey across cultures and philosophies.

Rendered in soft graphite on grey cardboard, the figure sits between stillness and transformation, inviting a moment of reflection in a fast-moving world.

Yinjie Sun is an internationally exhibiting artist and head teacher of Sunny Art Centre, London. His work has been shown across the UK, Spain, and China, and he has collaborated with institutions including The National Gallery and Royal Academy of Art.
