The first meeting of this new series will combine: two keynote speakers, panel discussions with invited guests, networking sessions with industry professionals, poster presentations and a student competition.

Want to get involved? Submit an abstract before 10 March for the chance to have your work showcased to experts in the industry. Abstract contributions touching on the following themes are especially welcomed:

- Climate Adaptation
- Digital Geoscience
- Energy Transition
- Ground Modelling
- Geohazards

10 February 1825 Gideon Mantell's paper “Notice on the Iguanodon, a newly discovered fossil reptile, from the sandstone of Tilgate forest, in Sussex” was read at the Royal Society. The Iguanodon became the first herbivorous dinosaur to be identified, and only by its teeth.

This lithograph from our archives includes the first ever depiction of an Iguanodon tooth in print. It is likely a proof of a plate which Mantell created to be included in Thomas Horsfield’s ‘The history and antiquities of Lewes and its vicinity' (1824), predating the paper by one year. Mantell still did not know what it was, but was aware of its importance—hence why it is placed in the centre. This print was sent to Mantell’s friend Charles Lyell.

The print can be seen in our new exhibition 'The Wizard of the Weald' at Burlington House, London. Join us for the launch this Thursday 13 February where our special guest speaker Dr Richard Fallon will give a talk exploring the major role that Victorian writers played in popularising dinosaurs in the 19th Century - https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Dragons

Other images: 'The Country of the Iguanodon' by John Martin, from Gideon Mantell's 'Wonders of Geology' (1838); Portrait of Gideon Algernon Mantell by unknown artist (c. 1845).
