Step inside the first-floor studio of Samuel Olowomeye, where storytelling and portraiture powerfully collide.

Since joining Kindred Studios in September last year, Samuel has been shaping his practice in his very first studio.

Originally trained in performing arts and self-taught as a visual artist, his early love for sketching evolved into striking large-scale painted faces that command attention.

Samuel’s current body of work, “This Ear Rings On,” explores deeply personal and political narratives rooted in the social, economic, and political realities of Nigeria.
Each face is layered with emotion, where hope, anger, and despair are emitted in a single gaze.

What makes his work uniquely compelling is the integration of painted plates and utensils. These elements extend the narrative. The contents of each plate connect intimately with the subject, often revealing stories that are tragic, yet rendered with undeniable beauty.

Viewers are immediately drawn into Samuel’s work through the intensity of the eyes and expressions. His paintings invite curiosity, spark conversation, and challenge us to reflect on the realities behind the faces.

Echo Canvas — part experiment, part performance 🎻🎨✨

Last night at Kindred Studios, artists came together in the ‘Glass Box’ to introduce themselves and share how they were feeling before loading up their brushes to make their marks on a large-scale canvas.

Accompanied by live music from and the space shifted as sound and painting unfolded side by side, each influencing the other.

The energy built as everyone played. It was messy, open, connecting and full of joy.

With special thanks to for creating and holding such a special space for this to happen.

Introducing painter and Kindred artist Ewa Galek, who recently shared her work with the community at Kindred Studios ✨

With a background in set design and painting, Ewa spent a decade in the world of theatre before COVID lockdown prompted a return to painting but this time with a sense of freedom and play. Drawing inspiration from time spent in nature in Poland her work builds from small, intuitive sketches into dense, immersive compositions.

Her paintings are inviting and unsettling in the same breath. Lush, sensory scenes where organic forms evolve into imagined creatures, and places of darkness sit deeper inside

Now focusing fully on her painting practice, is beginning to step into open calls and exhibitions…watch this space 👀

Last Friday, as the day softened and the noise thinned, the boards were set and Jad hosted an evening of chess for the Kindred artists.

There were no victories shouted into the room, only the soft language of movement, the careful placing of thought, the hum of music beneath it all.

Some arrived knowing the game,
some met it for the first time but as ever, the board made equals of us.

We are lucky to be surrounded by those willing to host, to teach, to gather, to turn an evening into something gently unforgettable.

Thank you to Jad for holding the space, and to all who came with curiosity, patience, and presence.

Until the next unfolding…

Yesterday we paid a visit to the studio of Kindred artist Camilla Brendon.

Inspired by the plastic waste along London’s waterways and her work with Thames21, Camilla transforms forgotten materials into bold 2D and 3D forms. From her Kelp Forest sculpture that hung in the RA to her current work of large-scale living plant installation, she weaves powerful pieces that reflect sustainability, interconnection and our relationship with the environment.

Camilla extends her practice through workshops and community projects, making creativity accessible to all while encouraging environmental action.

Keep an eye out for her upcoming work at London Rivers Week 👀🌱♻️

This week we had the privilege of hearing , an artist from Lebanon, speak about her deeply personal practice.

Her work is shaped by the realities of conflict in South Lebanon where she has experienced the personal consequences of war while also witnessing the environmental devastation caused by chemical warfare on the land.

Over a decade ago she made a conscious decision: to choose love over hate.

Since then, her practice has expanded beyond painting to include ceremony, sound healing, movement, and writing, forming a holistic process of reflection, healing, and connection to the land.

During the talk she shared the story behind a powerful work created after a ceremonial burning. On gathering ashes mixed with herbs, flowers, and natural pigments, she dipped her keffiyeh into the mixture and struck the fabric against paper laid on the floor, creating the bold black sweeping marks.

These marks hold both the darkness and the weight of conflict, while the brightly coloured arabesques that emerge between them speak of resilience and hope. The piece was created in a transcendent state, where movement, ritual, and painting became one.

Thank you, Zena, for such an open and moving talk.

Our studio visit this week was with Brazilian artist Alice Quaresma.

For over 15 years, Alice’s practice has explored the idea of home, not as an address, but as memory, time and lived experience.

Working with photography, collage and hand-drawn marks, she revisits images of her hometown Rio de Janeiro, sometimes decades after they were first shot.

By reprinting ageing negatives, enlarging imperfections and layering analogue marks like dots and lines, Alice reveals and obscures narratives at the same time – inviting the viewer into a space between memory and place.

Her works are intentionally tactile, often framed without glass to remove the barrier between artwork and viewer.

A fascinating insight into a practice shaped by migration, time and the ongoing search for home. Thank you 🙏

One of the many benefits of being at Kindred Studios is the opportunity to take part in skill-sharing sessions like this.

Yesterday, Kindred artists of all kinds came together for a special screen printing session led by Jad, our studio technician and a Kindred artist of many skills.

For most of us, printmaking isn’t an everyday part of our work. In fact, this was a completely new experience or something we hadn’t explored in years. From preparing screens to pulling our first prints, Jad guided us through every step of the screen printing process with patience, clarity and expertise.

Sessions like this reflect what makes Kindred special:🎨 Access to printmaking facilities🖨 Space to experiment outside your usual practice👥 A creative community that shares knowledge📚 Opportunities for artistic development

Kindred Studios is more than studio space. It’s creative exchange and permission to try something new.
