Off the coast of Australia, scientists tagged a healthy 500-pound great white shark and watched it slip away into the open ocean. Four months later, the tracking tag washed ashore on a beach. The shark did not. And the data sealed inside that little device told a story that should have been impossible: this great white, an apex predator nothing in the sea is supposed to hunt, had been swallowed whole and dragged nearly 2,000 feet down into the freezing dark. Something ate it. And it would take scientists years to finally work out what was big enough to do it.
