𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧.
Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby are two of Ireland's most famous and possibly q***r aristocrats. Eleanor Butler was the youngest daughter of the Butler family of Kilkenny Castle.

The pair met in 1768 and ten years later, disguised as men, fled Kilkenny together. They built a domestic haven in rural north Wales - a small farmhouse named Plas Newydd. Famous visitors included Anne Lister and William Wordsworth, who even dedicated a sonnet to them. After 50 years of their quiet rural life spent reading and gardening, they were buried together in St. Collen's graveyard.

Due to the frequency of romantic friendships in the 18th century, where women shared intense bonds, it is impossible to know for certain whether we would consider their relationship romantic in today's sense. However, it is said that they shared a bed, a series of dogs named Sappho and referred to each other as 'my better half'. Either way, it is certain that this life was a courageous choice in 18th-century Ireland, offering a roadmap for LGBTQ+ people to follow for centuries.

On Saturday 8 June we will be hosting the Llangollen Summer Fete on our grounds from 12:30pm to 4pm. The house will be open as normal but we will have no parking on-site all day.
