Llangollen Museum would like to thank The Community Ownership Fund (part of the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government) and The National Lottery Heritage Fund for their grant funding and support.

This funding enabled us to reach out to schools in the community and local area through a Programme of sessions including hands-on use of the Museum Handling Collection. Over the course of this project, we visited three schools engaging with pupils in sessions which were innovative, educational, informative and not least great fun.

Through the grant funding we are able to add to and improve the Handling Collection and look forward to many more visits to schools and within the community ensuring a lasting heritage and educational legacy for all. The Handling Collection is suitable for young people and adults alike.

Thanks go to our grant funders, schools and the local community.
Anyone who would like to organise a visit to view the Handling Collection or an outreach session please contact us at the Museum. We look forward to meeting you.

***Artefact of the Month***

Possibly one of the most important artefacts discovered in Llangollen to date, this hand axe was found around the southern vicinity of the area. This hand axe is still being researched, but so far it is considered to be at least 7,000 years old, which would place it in the Mesolithic period, however, it could be possibly older.

Hand axes like these would’ve been an important tool in the everyday lives of the people of the period, with the flint possibly being imported from elsewhere. This is a rare artefact to be found in North Wales. We at Llangollen Museum are please to share this artefact with you all, and we will make an update on it when it has been thoroughly researched.

We at the museum would like to extend our gratitude to Gill Henry for the donation of the wonderful item to the museum to share with you all.

Mae'n bosibl mai un o'r arteffactau pwysicaf a ddarganfuwyd yn Llangollen hyd yma, a ddarganfuwyd y fwyell law hon o amgylch cyffiniau deheuol yr ardal. Mae'r fwyell law hon yn dal i gael ei hymchwilio, ond hyd yn hyn ystyrir ei bod o leiaf 7,000 o flynyddoedd oed, a fyddai'n ei gosod yn y cyfnod Mesolithig, fodd bynnag, gallai fod yn hŷn o bosibl.

Byddai bwyeill llaw fel y rhain wedi bod yn offeryn pwysig ym mywydau beunyddiol pobl y cyfnod, gyda'r fflint o bosibl wedi'i fewnforio o rywle arall. Mae hwn yn arteffact prin i'w gael yng Ngogledd Cymru. Rydym ni yn Amgueddfa Llangollen yn falch o rannu'r arteffact hwn gyda chi gyd, a byddwn yn rhoi'r wybodaeth ddiweddaraf amdano pan fydd wedi'i ymchwilio'n drylwyr.

On tonight at the museum

Wednesday the 28th of May, Sally Knight will be holding a talk about her grandmother who was one of the early pioneer female pilots.

In 1937 a two-seater aeroplane piloted by Phyl Lewin and her husband Brigadier General A.C. Lewin disappeared over Southern Sudan. This book is the story of Phil’s life up to this point.

Of her Victorian childhood, travel before World War I, nursing as a VAD in France and then marriage and emigration to Kenya to farm. Widowed and remarried, she flew many times in small aeroplanes between Kenya and England in the 1930s. Diaries of these journeys make exciting reading.

Tickets are £3 on the door, refreshments will be provided.

We at Llangollen Museum are pleased to announce that we had raised £119 from Graham Edward's talk in March of the Welsh settlers of Patagonia. This money was to support Ysgol y Cwm, Trevelin, Patagonia; the Welsh school in Argentina, helping to keep the Welsh language to still be taught there just as the settlers had intended to do.

In total with the donation of our patrons, Graham raised £279! We and Graham would like to thank those who donated.

The web page for the school is on this link, and they will gladly take donations to keep them operating:

This coming Wednesday at Llangollen Museum we will be hosting Dr Jack Hunter's talk on the Paranormal Ecology of the Tanat Valley. If you like folklore, myths and legends as well as the paranormal history, then this is not one to miss!

We hope to see you there!

For our second talk for this month, Wednesday 30th of April, we will be hosting Dr Jack Hunter's presentation on The Paranormal Ecology of the Tanat Valley.

This presentation is an exploration of the supernatural folklore of Dyffryn Tanat (the Tanat Valley) in North Powys. Discover stories about the Tylwyth Teg (fairies) and their subterranean world, hear about the giants Berwyn, Rhuddwyn and Myvyr and their exploits in the landscape, and learn about the practices of the local Dynion Hysbys (Cunning Men) for dealing with spirits, amongst other legends and traditions from this magical part of the world. The presentation will also consider the role of paranormal experiences in the formation of supernatural folklore. Contemporary experiences might suggest that ghosts and fairies are not quite relegated to the past.

This talk will be held at 7pm in Llangollen Museum with tickets £3 at the door, refreshments will be provided.

***Artefact of the Month***

Artefact of the Month is back with a new cabinet to showcase it.
This box contains a collection of Tourist Guides dating back from 1898 to 1998 with each annual booklet containing advertisements for local businesses as well as information of the surrounding area. It is interesting to see the change of designs throughout the decades, with some of the ‘Lovely Llangollen Guides’ written by local author Chris Burrows, whose family have so kindly donated his collection.

Chris Burrows was the grandson of local cartoonist, Ernest Burrows, who was renowned for his comedic postcards that began sales in 1902, who Chris wrote a book about.

Chris Burrows, who sadly recently died, was well known locally, his family having lived in Llangollen for generations. He had a great interest in local history and a large collection of heritage items. We are so grateful to Chris’ family for choosing to donate this collection of Llangollen Guides, along with other items, to the Museum.

Do you live in a house in Llangollen that is over a hundred years old? Have you ever wondered about it's history? Who lived there before? Who built it? Does it have remarkable history tied to it? Wonder no more as our own curator, Peter Jones, has done extensive research on the house histories of Llangollen.

All we ask is for a donation of your choice to help keep us running!

An Illustrated Talk by David Crane
To launch a programme run by Grow Llangollen, and funded by the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape, David will present the history of the Seed Factory in Llangollen, which, at its height of operations, employed around 20% of the working population. He will follow the rise and fall of the company, look at what they did and where they worked, and finish with a 10 minute film showing scenes from inside the factory and at the testing ground at Pentrefelin.
As part of the programme, we will also be collecting any memories that people have about the Seed Factory. If you have any recollections, either from working there yourself, or from stories of family or friends, please do come along and let us know.
Admission £3 per person
(including tea/coffee/biscuits)
All welcome.
