On this day, 9th April 1860 Emily Hobhouse was born in St Ive near Liskeard.
Daughter to Caroline Trelawney and Reginald Hobhouse, a church minister.
Home educated she then attended finishing school in London where she lived with her uncle who introduced her to politics.
Emilyâs life led her to see some of the lowest points of humanity particularly during the Boer War when she travelled to South Africa where she saw the pain and suffering in camps which she reported back to the British Government demanding an enquiry into the treatment of prisoners.
From humble beginnings to a campaigner for human rights, Emily Hobhouse had a truly remarkable life.
The museum holds a small collection celebrating the life of Emily which is currently on display until September in the Rapson Gallery when we will be closing the gallery for refurbishment. We will then be collaborating with The Story of Emily to bring a brand new exhibition of her life to the museum.
