The Cornish Bottle Archive The Cornish Bottle Archive (founded in 2023) was established to document all known, found and collected Cornish bottles, to share with the community.

This is an ambitious project and we need your help to discover the bottles.

This month we were excited to discover not only our first full article printed in the glossy magazine… but we also made front page with our Wakeham of Helston river find.

Thankyou to for spotting us in our waders in January. Without your support, this opportunity would not have happened. And a huge thankyou to Anna for inviting us to share our story. And finally thankyou to our followers and community - we could not build this archive without your support, stories, finds and research.

This was our first magazine article. We loved writing it! We hope you enjoy the read.

Don’t panic…. We might be quiet but the research is still bubbling away.
We thought we would share this food storage stoneware jar with you.

Edward George Courtis was a son to William (boot and shoe maker) and Ann, growing up on Church Street, Helston.
He traded as a grocer living at 8 Coinagehall Street, with his wife Caroline and daughter Violet Annie. He died in August 1933 at the age of 64. You can see from the article, he was generous with his donations to charitable and community causes.

This is not the usual stoneware we share… it is what we believe to be a wine cask, which would have had a tap at the front and a cork to seal the top.

John Ellery of Camborne.
Initially a brewer and then evolving to be wine merchant as well. He married Elizabeth in 1830 and Christian in 1848 (who was witness to his first marriage).
His son John was born in 1850 and worked with his father and sadly died in 1890 at Bodmin Asylum.
He traded from Market Place and later on Commercial Road in Camborne. We have found reference to him trading as a brewer in the 1830s and into 1870s.

We would like to share 2 medicine bottles with you. They are a little later than we usually share -we thought someone might remember these companies.

Left: H S Estlick of St Dennis. Son of S H Estlick, who was also a chemist and started the family business in 1912.

Right: The Cornish Drug Stores Ltd of St Columb. This business traded in the 1950/60s and was registered to 2 Gordon Place. We know that Richard Guy Shapland liquidated the business in 1986.

We are sorry for the radio silence. We have been busy writing an article and preparing our website for the new pages to come soon.

For now, we wanted to share with you these 2 Premier patent bottles from Carharrack.
On the left, is an acid etched 6oz Premier bottle, with the print - ‘Davey & Bennet, Aerated Waterworks, Carrharrack’ - please note the spelling mistake.
On the right, another 6oz Premier with the embossing - ‘William Davey, Late Goldsworthy, Aerated Water, Ginger Beer Works, Carharrack’.

Recently we were lucky enough to meet a lady who is a direct descendant of the Goldsworthy family. She kindly shared some of her family research.
