We are a small museum at Dorrington on the edge of the Lincolnshire Fens specialising in agricultural equipment. Open 1st Sunday of the Month, April to October

The museum has a collection of tractors, agricultural machinery, and a narrow gauge railway.

A small gang of two continued work on the cross line. The sleepers have now been lifted and packed ready for spiking. After lunch, the foundations were marked out for an extension to the tractor shed, and a template produced for parts to refurbish a replacement set of International TD9 crawler tractor tracks.

The signalbox east end has had a coat of grey paint, and the downpipe and nameboard touched up with black gloss.

Down the line, the heap of clay that had been dug from the cross line trackbed was removed. Fishplates were fitted to the loose rails, and the sleepers positioned ready for lifting and spiking.

A small gang continued work on the cross line. A layer of crushed rubble and concrete provided a base layer, followed by a layer of 2in limestone ballast. The original rails were positioned to see if we could reuse them rather than bending a new set. We will need to reposition the first three sleepers about a foot towards the main line in either case.

Over the last two Sundays, a start has been made on relaying the cross line which connects both sides of the main loop. The old formation was scrapped away, and then more clay soil removed to allow for a deeper solid bed for the track.

In the main exhibition hall, painting the walls continued, and the magneto on the Ransomes MG2 removed for servicing as there is a lack of a spark.

Across in the workshops, our latest tractor restoration, an International TD9, is progressing. However, a more important investigation into a wiring fault on our farm tractor, a John Deere 2650, has taken up some of our time. A broken wire in the cab roof was eventually found and repaired.

Next Sunday is our monthly public open day, so maintenance resumes on the third Sunday in August.

Next Sunday we have a visiting party from the Narrow Gauge Railway Society. Five of the locomotives were prepared and given a run to ensure all was in order. Unfortunately the sixth locomotive, our Clay Cross Lister, which had an oil dilution issue has now developed a seized engine. It will have to take its turn in the works for attention. It is likely to be the piston rings stuck as the engine has not been turned over for some time.

Point Installation Day. A layer of crushed concrete, followed by some 2in limestone ballast. The sleepers were then cut to length and the point lowered into place. The points slotted perfectly into the cut gap. Initial sleeper packing with 1in limestone ballast, and the points spiked to the sleepers. Finally the sleeper bays filled with 1in ballast and fully tamped. The track will need further tamping once it has had some use.

A good day's work, helped by all the preparation done last week.

Following removal of the rails last week, we were able to dig out the trackbed using the digger - far easier on a hot day. The approach track was levelled ready for installing the points.

Work has commenced on installing a set of right-hand points in the locomotive shed to create a fourth storage road. The existing track has been lifted, ready for the track formation to be dug out to allow installation of some wood sleepers.

With a large radio controlled car event at the adjacent field, the digger was left in its shed until next weekend.

A fine sunny day allowed us to cast the cafe entrance ramp. The Liner Concrete Machinery Company mixer was running all day with batches of concrete while the mortar for the bricks was mixed by hand. The completed ramp is now covered to prevent the museum cat from signing the work!

Painting of the rear wall of the museum building was finished apart from the black bottom band.

Today's main tasks were preparing to fit a ramp to the cafe entrance. The area has been dug out ready for the brickwork and concrete. Over in the loco shed, a start was made clearing the floor area around the entrance rails ready for them to be lifted out and replaced with a right-hand point. This will provide further under-cover storage. One of our volunteers has been renovating some of the signs and the entrance sign from the car park has been finished.
