Would you cycle 390 miles in a single day for art’s sake?

The prolific Lincolnshire artist Karl Salsbury Wood (1888-1958) was determined to document every windmill in England, embarking on monumental bicycle expeditions in colourful, eccentric outfits. His mission was almost complete when he was imprisoned on grounds of homosexuality, and consequently never returned to Lincolnshire or published his works.

Visit Common Ground at The Hub in Sleaford to view a small selection of his works until the 8 November. The exhibition features a video installation by Emily Anderson that celebrates Karl Wood's fascinating but overlooked career, ‘both his artistic devotion…and his navigation of early 20th-century life as a q***r man.' The Usher Young Creatives zine publication Lincolnshire Qu**rs responds to the artist's journal notes.

Bask in the October sun with the god of light and goddess of wilderness ☀🍂

Alan Kane responded to our neoclassical statue collection in 2014 by reconceptualising garden statues within a fine art space, challenging traditional hierarchies of the art world. Kane often features found and readymade elements in his sculptures to playfully celebrate the everyday.

Artemis and Apollo are at home watching over our Lincolnshire gallery terrace as deities of the pastoral, healing, and protection of young children.

Artemis governs hunting, nature, wild animals, herds, flocks, and crops, with her shrines often located in wetlands (like Lincolnshire once was!) Apollo is patron of the sun, music, songs, dance, prophecy and poetry.

Everyone is snapping up our latest exhibition! 📸

The Lincoln Camera Club brings a fresh lens to the local community, depicting the wonderful (and weird!) of the everyday. This year they feature steam punks, sugar beets, sluice gates, spitfires, sheep shearing, cycling, sausages and even a bit of chiropody. 🫜🐑

Immerse yourself in a century old tradition – the club hosted their first exhibition at the Usher Gallery when we opened in 1927!

Long week ahead?

Inhale deeply and nurture yourself this evening with Yoga Hatha flow at the Usher Gallery.

The 60-minute session uses movement, meditation and breathing practice to heal the body and mind. All experience levels are welcome. You are invited to move and breathe however is comfortable, in unity with your own rhythm.

Diving into the week with this surreal stoneware sculpture submerged in our stores 🦞
Pamela Mei-Yee Leung (1962). Lobster Diver. Hand built stoneware and coloured glazes, 1991. was created on residency at the Usher Gallery. The whimsical half-lobster, half-human is complete with claws and feet! 👣

Each Leung creature expresses a secret moral message and is inspired by traditional Chinese art and mythology 🧧

A year later Leung created a similar work called Lobster in Chair, of which she stated: “The dragon is the king among sea creatures but, to use the analogy of chess, the lobster may be thought of as a bishop. I have tried to portray this figure as a powerful but thoughtful creature, wise and possibly shrewd.”

🔧 Essential improvements coming to Gallery 2 at the Usher Gallery

From 28 September, Gallery 2 will temporarily close while we carry out essential improvement works to the space.

Before then, there's still time to visit one of the gallery's most popular displays, featuring The Papestry, works by L.S. Lowry, and a range of highlights from Lincolnshire's art collections.

While Gallery 2 is closed, the rest of the Usher Gallery will remain open wherever possible. We're looking forward to welcoming visitors back to an improved Gallery 2 in January 2027.

Thank you for your patience and support while these important works are carried out.
