Farleys House & Gallery, Home of Surrealists Lee Miller & Roland Penrose Sussex home of photographer Lee Miller and artist Roland Penrose.

Lee Miller and Roland Penrose came to live at Farleys in 1949 and for the 35 years that followed they built up a collection of contemporary art treasures, many of which were created by their friends and visitors including Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Max Ernst,Leonora Carrington and Joan Miró. The work of these and numerous others are exhibited in the house alongside those of Penrose and Miller giving the visitor a fascinating look into the world of the Surrealists.

This curious object was perhaps used like the ‘fidget toys’ so popular today, and again appealed to Lee’s sense of humour…

The ‘instructions’ are particularly hilarious:

This ‘hot air…grinder’ was allegedly the ‘newest American status symbol’ - made by ‘unemployed moonshiners’ (!) This could be used ‘for relieving nervous tension for advanced stages of thumb twiddling’, for sharpening dull conversations…the world’s most useless necessity’

Ahead of our upcoming 'Art Laughs' comedy night later this month, we're leaning into Lee Miller's playful side...

🃏Lee loved practical jokes! Her study here at Farleys is full of strange objects of amusement and trickery, such as a convincing replica of a melting ice-cream sundae (as seen here) and French patisserie cakes make of wax and fake flies.

'She even found some plastic ice cubes containing imitation flies and on a visit to Picasso slipped one into his drink' recalls Lee's son, Antony Penrose.

Have a giggle in our gallery with . Founded by art historian and comedian Verity Babbs, this series has previously delighted audiences at the National Gallery, Pallant House and Christie's - and now its Farleys' turn. This is considered the first photobook by an English Surrealist artist.
