Great to speak with the Mayor of Lewes, Delaware, Amy Marasco, today to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence!

Pleased to be joined by Cllrs Matthew Bird and Wendy Maples (Deputy Mayors), Leanne O'Boyle (director of 'Thomas Paine: Legacy'), Ellen McCabe (City Manager in Delaware), Mary Ellen Kelly (organiser of the 250th anniversary festivities) and Ashley Akgoren (City Clerk).

All done over a video conference, with me joining from Waldshut-Tiengen (where I'm representing Lewes at our twin town's Schwyzertag celebrations). We even had a live feed from the Festival of Democracy in Lewes, which seemed very apt!

Tom Paine’s Bones have arrived at Bull House! Excited to be working with the artist Paul Fitzgerald for tomorrow’s Lewes Festival of Democracy. This 8ft skeleton puppet of Paine will lead the parade through the town to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Join us from 1pm! Lewes Climate Hub Experience Sussex

Want to help bring Tom Paine's bones to life?

We're looking for volunteers to help operate our giant 8ft walking skeleton puppet of Thomas Paine at the Lewes Festival of Democracy on 4 July.

No experience needed! The artist who created the puppet will give a short training session at Bull House at 11am, and all are welcome to take part.

It's a unique chance to be at the heart of the parade, meet new people, and help one of the festival's most spectacular creations stride through Lewes.

Today is Sussex Day and we couldn’t think of a better way of spending it than by hosting the Sussex Futures Network at Bull House to explore building a democracy that works for everyone. Happy Sussex Day!

Thomas Paine was born in Thetford, Norfolk on 29th January 1737. He would go on to participate in both the American and French Revolutions. Happy birthday Thomas Paine!
