The University of Leicester annual Sculpture in the Garden exhibition celebrates ten years of presenting the best of modern sculpture in a magnificent floral setting. The exhibition runs from Sunday 26 June 2011 to Sunday 30 October 2011 and features 78 pieces from 64 artists, some of which have been featured in previous years. A wide variety of materials have been used to create the pieces on sho

w including sandstone, granite, limestone, marble, stainless steel, cast iron, copper, bronze, zinc, elm, larch, oak, cement, acrylic, glass, fibreglass and plastic bags. Among the artists with local connections exhibiting in the garden this year are Alison Barwick, who was artist in residence at Embrace Arts; Robert Fogell who studied in our School of Education; Leicester-born Ken Ford, who received an Honorary Degree from the University last year; Jeff Lowe, another Leicester-born artist; Austin J Orwin, who has been based locally for 11 years now; and John Sydney Carter himself. Alison Barwick’s ‘Free View’, a 7.3m pyramid of Perspex, steel, acrylic and oil paint is the tallest sculpture in this year’s exhibition while the smallest pieces include Sheila Vollmer’s geometric zinc creation ‘Star Line 9 (Petrol)’, Jilly Sutton’s olive stone resin face ‘Blind Dreamer’ and James Sutton’s aurora rose marble sphere ‘Blastocyst’. A Decade of Sculpture in the Garden will be officially opened by University of Leicester Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Robert Burgess. The Harold Martin Botanic Garden is in Oadby, near Leicester Race Course; the visitor entrance is on Glebe Road (LE2 2LD).
