We are delighted to announce that Leeds Art Gallery are acquiring two works by Hannah Catherine Jones from her recent exhibition *UNEARTHING(S)* commissioned by Yorkshire Contemporary.

*Bimshire* is a series of six cushions on which Jones weaves together images of 'home', depicting family photos interspersed among Yorkshire and Barbadian landscapes. The geometric patterns created by the photos echo kente, a traditional Ghanaian textile now utilised by Afro-Caribbean diasporas around the world. Together the works reveal fragments of Jones' family history, while providing a space for visitors to sit and reflect.

Sound work Owed to Unearthing(s) draws from diverse genres including opera, dub, folk, spiritual jazz and from further afield. Jones includes samples and recordings made using her voice and an array of instruments, sonically weaving together the different elements to reflect on grief and the loss of her father - himself a musician and music teacher - in 2025.

As an artist from the region and a legacy of her largest solo exhibition to date, we are thrilled these two works can enter and enrich the city's art collection. We thank the Art Fund , whose support made this acquisition possible.

UNEARTHING(S) is commissioned by Yorkshire Contemporary in partnership with Leeds Art Gallery. It is funded by Arts Council England, Art Fund, Henry Moore Foundation and a Research Support Award from Goldsmiths, University of London.

For this event, Jones will revisit and push beyond motifs and themes from her newly commissioned sound work Owed to Unearthing(s), part of the current exhibition. Drawing from diverse genres including opera, dub, folk, spiritual jazz and from further afield the soundscape sonically weaves together diverse elements to reflect on grief and loss.

In Jones' practice as a performer she conjures otherworldly soundscapes to transport audiences, building layers from a live multi-instrumental set-up including theremin(s), voice, synthesisers, strings, samples and utilising fx and multiple looping systems simultaneously.

Hannah has previously performed at venues including the Barbican, Cafe Oto, ICA, London Jazz Festival and the National Gallery amongst others.

UNEARTHING(S) is open until 30 August. For more information about the exhibition, visit the link in our bio 🔗
