Market Moments

Opened in 1864, Larne Market Yard was renovated by Larne Urban District Council in 1937. This plaque, from Larne Museum's archives, commemorates the occasion and lists members of the council. Larne Urban District Council became Larne Borough Council in 1939.

The Weighbridge

Early weighbridges were constructed almost entirely out of wood with a system of levers and knife edges, often connected to a steelyard balance for weighing the livestock. The technology did not change much until the mid-20th century, when the bridges were constructed of steel and the steelyard balances were replaced with complex dial systems.

Larne Market Yard had a 5 ton weighbridge at first but by January 1937, it was considered unsuitable. The Council decided to proceed with building a new 20 ton weighbridge which was expected to cost between £255 and £360.

According to the Larne Times of Saturday 6th February, 1937, the old weighbridge was bought by Robert McNinch for £10.

A new dial, or clock, weighbridge was later installed in December 1954. The weighbridge was left intact during the refurbishment of the yard in 2013.

Market Moments

The Market Yard has witnessed many events and special occasions over the years. With the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III due to take place next Saturday 6th May, we are looking back at a Royal visit. During their visit to Northern Ireland, on 26th June 1942, to inspect British and American military personnel, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Larne Market where they inspected a WRNS unit. They also inspected the Royal Naval Guard of Honour, and the men of the United States Marines and Ulster Home Guard.

Outdoor markets are to be reopened to the public, with strict social distancing measures in place, the Group Party Leaders on Council have agreed.

Two council-run markets, in and , as well as Market, which is run by the YMCA, will open for the purchase of essential grocery items including food.

Ballymena Market will be open again from this Saturday onwards, with Larne reopening on Wednesday next, 27 May, and Carrickfergus Market from Thursday 28 May.

In respect of Ballymena Market, car boot sales will not take place until further notice.

Council agreed the decision after considering the value of the weekly markets to traders, shoppers and the borough’s heritage.

The development underpins Council’s commitment to supporting business growth and development in the local area.

In order to protect the health and safety of the public, traders and council staff, a number of changes to the operation of each market will apply.

The markets will open from 9am to 12 noon, with set-up from 8am, and customers will not be permitted access until 9am.

Council staff will be present in Ballymena and Larne to assist with social distancing measures, while customers will be required to adhere to a one-way system of shopping and queuing.
